BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College baseball Scots split an American Midwest Conference double-header with the William Woods Owls on Friday afternoon at Fred Wann Field in Batesville.
The Scots (16-16, 9-5) lost the first game 6-1 to the Owls (24-14, 9-5) and came back behind the pitching of
Cameron Gordon to win 7-6.
In the first game, the Scots were held to one hit and one run. Lyon College scored in the bottom of the second inning when
Garrett Graef hit a sacrifice grounder to the first base side of the infield and
Bradley McLemore scored from third to make it 3-1 at that point.
Derek Underwood walked,
Lane McLeavain walked twice and McLemore got the only hit.
Ayden Heitmann (6-3) suffered the loss for the Scots.
The second game saw the Scots score five times in the bottom of the second inning and add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.Â
Graef singled in McLemore and
Jayden Cull to start the bottom of the second.
Zane Wallace singled in McLeavain and Graef, then
Hayden Hargrave got a base hit to bring in Wallace for a 5-0 Lyon College lead.
The Owls came back to score on a two-run homer in the top of the third, then added another run in the fourth and took the lead 6-5 in the top of the fifth with three more runs.Â
In the bottom of the fifth, McLeavain reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error.
Brayden Anderson and McLemore scored on the play to put the Scots ahead 7-6.Â
From there, Lyon College road the ever-strengthening arm of
Cameron Gordon. Gordon pitched the entire nine innings, gave up seven hits and six runs, five of which were earned. He walked only two batters and struck out a season-high eight batters of the 37 he faced. Gordon struck two of the final three batters.
Lyon College had seven hits in the game and seven runs.
Austin Shipman was 1-for-4, Anderson came in as a pinch-runner and scored, McLemore was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and drew a walk.
Derek Underwood walked once, Cull was 0-for-2 with a run scored and two walks, McLeavain had a 2-run double in two at-bats and he walked twice. Graef went 1-for-3, scored a run, had two RBIs and walked, Wallace was 2-for-4 with one run scored and had knocked in two runs, Hargrave was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
The two teams will meet on Saturday at noon in the final game of the series.
