BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Lyon College softball Scots swept an American Midwest Conference double-header from the visiting Stephens College Stars on Saturday afternoon at Howard and Mary House Field, 5-3 and 7-6.
The Scots (14-12 and 2-4) had six hits in the first game. In the second contest,
McKenzie Campbell doubled in
Sophie Varela and
Anna Voth to win with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the first game, Stephens led 1-0 after one inning, but
Whitney Mitchell doubled in
Fallon Lancaster to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. In the bottom of the third, MK Duffield singled in Varela for a 2-1 Lyon College lead.
Stephen came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth, but in the bottom half of the inning, Varela hit a sacrifice fly to score
Alyssa Buentello and Duffield blasted a 2-run homer to make it 5-2.
The Scots walked seven times in the game and Duffield was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in. Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.Â
McKenzie Campbell was the winning pitcher for Lyon College. Campbell (8-6) pitched seven innings for the Scots and allowed three earned runs, while striking out eight batters.
In the second game, Mitchell reached second on an error by the Stars that scored
Emily Martinez in the bottom of the third inning. Varela singled up the middle to score
Trinity Arrambide for a 2-0 lead.
Stephens came back to score a run in the top of the fourth, but Lyon added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 5-1. Mitchell reached first on an error that scored
Madison Lawrence. Arrambide scored when Mitchell was caught stealing second base and Duffield doubled to score Varela.
Stephens came back to score four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. In the top of the seventh, Campbell doubled to bring in Varela and Voth with two outs for the Scots' victory.Â
Lyon College had nine hits in the game. Buentello pitched seven full innings for the Scots' win and allowed five hits, six earned runs and struck out four.Â
