Natalya Kaza scored a season-high 19 points and
Allison Byars added 17 points to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Central Baptist College Mustangs 65-62 on Thursday night in American Midwest Conference action in Conway.
The Scots (9-13, 8-10) got 38 points from the paint, 10 points off of turnovers, had nine second-chance points and 26 points from the bench.
Mari-Hanna Newsom scored nine points,
Paige Tate and
Savanna Lopez added six points each, while
Kristen Baham had five points,
Kayla Richardson had one basket and
Blake Green made a free throw.
The first quarter was tied 17-17 and CBC (9-13, 4-13) outscored Lyon 12-11 in the second period to lead 29-28 at halftime. The Mustangs outscored the Scots 16-15 in the third period, but in the decisive fourth quarter, Lyon came alive to outscore CBC 22-17.
Tate made the first four points for the Scots to open the game, then Byars put in two free throws and Lopez scored on a layup for an 8-4 lead. Baham hit a three-pointer and seconds later, Byars put in a free throw to put Lyon up by seven points at the 5:07 mark. Kaza scored the Scots next basket at the 3:27 mark to make it a nine point lead. CBC outscored the Scots 9-1 to tie the game at 15-15 and Newsom made a layup to tie the game with 22 seconds left in the period.
Kaza scored twice to keep the game tied for the Scots. Byars scored inside and Newsom made a three-pointer, then got a steal and a layup. CBC came back to take a one-point lead before halftime.
Richardson and Byars scored in a slow start to the third quarter for both teams. Kaza made a three-pointer from the corner to cut the CBC to one point with 4:28 to go in the third period, 36-35. Kaza scored two more baskets and Lopez scored twice in the paint on turnaround jumpers to keep the Scots within two points, 45-43.
Green made a free throw and Kaza put in two straight layups to tie the game at 48-48 with 7:46 to go. Kaza scored again to tie the game at 50-50, then Tate put in two free throws and Newsom made a basket to put Lyon ahead by one with 4:02 to go, 54-53. Byars scored inside and completed a three-point play to push the Scots lead to six points, then Byars hit a jumper and put in two free throws with 37 seconds to go to make it a 63-56 lead. Baham sealed the win with two free throws in the final 15 seconds.
