BATESVILLE, Ark. -
Trenton Bell scored 34 points and
John Paul Morgan had 21 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Lyon College Scots over visiting Williams Baptist 80-77 on Tuesday night at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (8-12, 4-9) held a 41-35 halftime advantage and held off a late rally by the Eagles.
Sando Hill had 13 points, while
Nikola SaSaroga scored seven points and eight rebounds.
Gavin Brunson scored four points,Â
Devan Halford added a free throw and
John Michael Stastny had two rebounds.
Lyon College scored six points in the paint, had 13 points off of turnovers, eight second chance points and led by as much as 13 points in the first half.Â
Bell opened the game with a three-pointer, Brunson scored, Hill put in a layup, Morgan had a put back for a score and a 9-5 lead. After the Eagles tied the game at 9-9 and took a four point lead, Hill made a three-pointer for Lyon, then Morgan and SaSaroga scored to get the lead back for the Scots, 16-15. Bell made another three-pointer and completed a three-point play the old fashion way to tie the game at 22-22, then he hit another three-pointer for the Scots lead. Bell made his third and fourth three-pointers in a matter of seconds for a nine-point Lyon College lead. SaSaroga put in a basket, Morgan hit a jumper and Bell made two free throws. Brunson's free throws with 4:26 left in the first half put the Scots ahead by 13, 39-26.Â
Bell opened the second half with a jump shot and a three-pointer. SaSaroga made one of two free throws and Morgan scored, but Williams Baptist came back to cut the lead to 49-43. Morgan scored inside, Bell made a three-pointer and SaSaroga made two more free throws to push the Scots lead back to 13 points, 56-43 with 14:23 to play. Morgan scored again inside, then hit a three-pointer from the wing, but
Ben Keton led the Eagles back to within five points until Hill's layup.Â
Later in the second half, Bell scored to put the Scots up 71-69, but the Eagles came back to tie the game at 72-72 with 4:43 to go. Morgan kept the Scots in front, but Williams Baptist tied it at 74-74. The Eagles went up by two points, but Hill hit a jumper to tie the game at 76-76 with 1:56 left. Morgan made two free throws at the 1:02 mark to put the Scots back ahead by two and in the waning seconds, Morgan and Halford connected on free throws and Stastny came down with the final rebound to secure the win for Lyon College.
