Scots softball sweeps double header from Iowa Wesleyan for a second time

BATESVILLE, Arkansas -  The Lyon College Scots softball team swept a double-header on Saturday from the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers at Howard and Mary House Field on Saturday, 10-1 and 7-6, to win the four-game series 4-0.

The Scots (6-6) opened Game 1 with a 9-run first inning and went on to institute the run-rule in the fifth leading 10-1. 

Lyon started the bottom of the first inning with a single from Whitney Mitchell that scored Anna Voth with the bases loaded. Mitchell advanced to second on a wild pitch, Savanna Lee moved to third and MK Diffield scored for the Scots. Alyssa Buentello reached on an error and Lee scored. McKenzie Campbell singled in Mitchell, Emily Martinez reached on an error and Buentello scored. Sophie Varela singled in Campbell, Voth doubled to the fence to score Martinez, Duffield reached first on an error that scored Varela and Voth to make it 9-0.

Iowa Wesleyan got a single run in the top of the second inning, but the Scots put the game out of reach when Lee doubled in Duffield to institute the 8-run rule after five-innings.

Voth, Duffled and Lee all had doubles in the first game for Lyon College. Sabrina Lowe (1-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Scots, going five innings, giving up five hits, one run and striking out four.

In Game 2, the Scots came from behind in the bottom of the seventh inning to win by one.

Iowa Wesleyan led 2-0 after the second inning, but in the bottom of the third, Mitchell reached on an error that scored Lee and Duffield and the game 2-2. 
The Tigers added two more runs in top of the fourth inning  and again, the Scots came back to tie the game when Varela doubled in Campbell and Varela scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 4-4. 
Iowa Wesleyan scored twice more in the top of the fifth inning. This time, Duffield hit a solo homer over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to one. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Campbell singled with the bases loaded to score Mitchell from third and advance Trinity Arrambide to second and Lowe to third. Varela singled to up the middle to bring in Lowe and end the game.

Buentello started the game on the mound for the Scots and pitched two innings, giving up four hits and two runs, while striking out one. Campbell (4-2) came back to pick up the win for Lyon College going five innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs to go with five strikeouts.
