Scots defeat William Woods in double-overtime

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - A controversial call at the end of regulation send the Lyon College and the William Woods Owls in to a double-overtime and the Scots eventually overcame and prevailed for a 80-77 victory to end the regular season in the American Midwest Conference.

The crowed at Becknell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon saw Mari-Hanna Newsom inbounds the ball to Paige Tate who passed to a cutting Allison Byars for a layup as the time ran off the clock. However, officials discussed the last play and gave Byars a free throw from a foul, put .2 seconds back on the clock and called a technical foul for the players going onto the court after the buzzer had sounded. 
All of that ended up with Byars missing a free throw and William Woods connecting on both technical free throws for a tie at the end of regulation. 

The Scots (12-13 and 10-10) got 23 points form Savanna Lopez, 22 points from Allison Byars and 20 points scored by Paige Tate.

William Woods jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Natalya Kaza scored on a baseline jump shot, then Lopez scored five baskets in a row for Lyon College to make it an 18-12 first quarter. 

In the second quarter, Tate scored six points in a row to keep the Scots close to the Owls 25-22. Ashley Jones made two free throws, Kayla Richarsdon made a free throw, Byars hit a three-pointer and Tate scored to put the Scots up 30-29 by halftime.

Byars, Tate and Kristen Baham scored in the first minutes of the third period, then Lopez made two baskets in a row and Mari-Hanna Newsom made a three-pointer for a 47-33 Scots lead. 

William Woods closed the game to 10 points by the end of the third quarter and used most of the fourth quarter to make a come back to tie the game at 58-58 with 1:48 to go. Byars made a shot with 1.3 seconds in regulation to give the Scots a 62-60 lead. Then the technical foul for running on the court.

In the first overtime, Byars put the Scots in front 68-67 with a jumper, but William Woods tied it at 68-68. The Owls took the lead with four seconds to play, but Byars scored to tie the game at 70-70, but missed the free throw that would have completed a three-point play with no time on the clock.

Byars, Newsom and Tate made free throws in the second overtime to up the Scots lead to 80-74.
