Scots women's basketball has season ended by UHS&P at AMC tourney

COLUMBIA, Missouri - The Lyon College Scots women's basketball suffered a heart-breaking 72-68 loss to the University of Health, Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics on Friday afternoon at the American Midwest Conference tournament played at Columbia College.

The Scots finish the season with a 12-14 overall record and were 10-10 in the AMC and the sixth seed for the tournament. Allison Byars led Lyon College with 21 points, Natalya Kaza and Savanna Lopez both had 12 points, Kayla Richardson scored seven points, Mari-Hanna Newsom and Paige Tate scored six points each and Kristen Baham added four points.

The Scots got 30 points in the paint, 10 points off of turnovers, had 12 second chance points and 24 points from the bench. Their largest lead was 10 points with 7:21 to go in the second quarter, 24-14. 

Lyon College led 15-8 after the first quarter and 30-26 at halftime. The Scots outscored the Eutectics 22-19 in the third quarter to lead 52-45, but Pharmacy outscored Lyon 27-16 in the fourth quarter and led by as much as seven points with 48 seconds to go. 

Byars, Richardson, Lopez and Tate scored to make it 11-4 early on. Lopez and Byars added baskets to put the Scots up 15-8. 

Tate scored twice to start the second quarter for Lyon and Richardson made a three-pointer for a 24-14 Scots lead with 6:19 to go before halftime. Newsom put in a layup a minute later to keep the lead at 10 points, but the Eutectics came back to get within two points and close out the half down by four.

In the third quarter, the Scots stayed in front by four to five points thanks to baskets by Kaza, Byars and Lopez. Newsom scored with 1:32 to go in the quarter to make it 47-41, then Kaza hit a three-pointer for an eight-point Scots advantage. The quarter ended with a basket by Baham to make it 52-45.

Baham, Kaza and Lopez scored for Lyon, but UHS&P came back and tied the game at 56-56 with 6:48 to go. Byars tied the game a minute later with two free throws and the Eutectics tied it at 60-60 with 4:40 to go after a Kaza layup. 
Pharmacy increased its lead by seven on a 9-2 run over the final two minutes. Byars made a three-pointer, a completed a three-point play to close the gap to one point, 69-68 with 25 seconds left. The Eutectics made two free throws and the Scots missed a three-pointer with 12 seconds left and missed a free throw at the three-second mark.
