LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - The Lyon College Scots volleyball team finished out their regular season on Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky playing against host Spalding University and Fontbonne University in SLIAC action.
The Scots (16-17, 10-8) have battled throughout the year against new conference opponents and undoubtedly left their mark in the SLIAC this season under the direction of head coach
Kortney Cunningham. In her second season leading these ladies, she saw seniors grow to new heights in their abilities and underclassmen strive to become better each day. To be able to do that and see this team grow into top competitors in a conference they had never seen, states volumes about their character and physical abilities while facing adversity. These Fighting Scots expressed the essence of Lyon College volleyball on every court they stepped on.
On Saturday was their final match of the regular season, however it is not the end of the year for this team. They accepted a bid to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association and will be playing in Uniontown, Pennsylvania next week for the National Small College Championship in volleyball.
Wrapping up their first season in SLIAC action, at Spalding, Lyon College won 25-21, 25-16 and 25-22 against the host Gorlocks, but fell in straight sets to Fontbonne 25-16, 25-20 and 25-11.
The match leaders in the Spalding win were
Paeton Tucker with 11 kills,
Kylee Sabella with 10 kills and
Isabella Beasley finished with seven kills. Tucker led in ace serves with four, while Beasley and Sabella had one each.
Keeley Beary had three blocks for points, while Beasley and Tucker had two blocks each.
Madeline Hopson had 18 assists, Beasley had 12 and Sabella got one. The digs were led by
Marti Flores with 15, Tucker had 13 and Sabella had 10.Â
Against Fontbonne, Lyon lost 25-16, 25-20 and 25-11.
The first match saw the Scots have a lead, but the Griffins rallied back to overtake them and go on to take the first set. In the second set Lyon was ahead most of the time and looked to be on the verge of making the turn for a win, but Fontbonne rallied again in the final stages to capture the second set. In the third, after a short battle early on, the Griffins moved out to an insurmountable lead and took the match.
Sabella led Lyon with six kills, while
Bethany Williams and Beary had five kills each. Sabella had two aces, while Hopson adn Flores had one each. Beasley and Beary had two blocks each, with Williams getting one. Hopson led in an assists with nine, Beasley had four and Flores three. Tucker had 15 digs, Flores had 10 and Beasley had seven for the Scots in the match.
