LEMONT FURNACE, Pennsylvania - The Lyon College volleyball Fighting Scots grabbed the nation's attention on Thursday afternoon by defeating the top seeded team Maine-Fort Kent in the USCAA National Small College volleyball Championships at Penn State-Fayette 3-0 in Lemont Furnace, Pennsylvania.
The Scots (17-17) won the first set 25-13, won the second set 25-18 and took the match with a thrilling come-from-behind 25-21 win in set three.Â
Lyon College found itself down 4-0 early on in the first set, but a kill from
Bethany Williams on an assist from
Madeline Hopson set the tone for a rally. A block by
Isabella Beasley and Williams led to another kill from Williams and a block for a point by
Keeley Beary and
Paeton Tucker. Beary and Beasley teamed up for a block to tie the set at 5-5. A kill from Tucker on a set from Hopson, then a kill from Tucker off a set from Beasley put the Scots in front. Tucker continued with the hot swing with another kill off a set from
Marti Flores, then Tucker slammed the ball again for a kill off a set from Beasley. Beery got a kill, then blocked MFK for an 11-6 lead. A service error and an attack error from Fort Kent put Lyon ahead by six points. A kill from Williams off a set from Beasley led to a kill by USCAA All-American
Kylee Sabella on another set from Beasley. An attack error from MFK allowed for a 17-9 Scots lead.Â
Lyon added two more points off of two straight errors by Fort Kent, then two kills from Beasley led to a kill from Williams. Williams served three aces in a row to end the set 25-13.
Two errors by MFK to start the second set was combined with a kill from Tucker off a set from Hopson for a 3-0 Scots advantage. Tucker and Hopson teamed again for another kill, then Beasley and Hopson combined for a set and kill for a 5-3 Lyon lead early on. Tucker got a kill and a block by Beary made it a two point lead, then two service errors by Fort Kent and a service ace from Hopson got another rally started for the Scots. An attack error and a service ace from Hopson led to a block from Beasley and Williams for a 13-6 lead. Another MFK attack error was followed by two straight kills from Beasley, then an attack error set up Tucker for a kill off a Beasley set for an 18-9 Scots advantage.Â
MFK got four points in a row, but two bad sets ended its rally and Beasley beat down two kills in a row, before Sabella added a kill. An attack error on Fort Kent ended the second set with Lyon College on top 25-18.
Williams and Beasley started the third set with kills for the Scots, but MFK went on a five point run to take the early lead in set three. Williams stopped the rally momentarily with a kill. Fort Kent outscored the Scots 4-1 to go up 9-4, but Tucker got two kills in a row, Sabella got a kill and an attack error led to another Sabella kill. MFK suffered another attack error and Sabella made them pay with her third kill in a row to tie the set 11-11.
Janiya Vanderpool got a kill off a set from Beasley, then Sabella got a kill to start a four-point rally that saw Beasley got two straight kills off of sets from Hopson and Flores. An attack error from Fort Kent made with a 16-12 Lyon College lead. Sabella got another kill, then an attack error happened from MFK that set up Beasley for a kill and a 19-13 advantage.Â
Fort Kent came back with a short 5-1 rally to close the Scots lead to three points, but Beasley killed the ball. Fort Kent stayed close on errors by Lyon, but Sabella finished off the set and the match with three hard kills for the Scots in a 25-21 win.
The Scots will now play Salem University at 8 a.m. on Friday morning and with a win, they could secure themselves a spot in the semifinals later on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
