Allison Byars scored 17 points and Booklyn Rowe had a season-high 16 points for Lyon College, but it wasn't enough in a 73-59 loss against the University of the Ozarks Eagles on Tuesday night in Clarksville.
The Scots (0-2) got as close as two points 59-57 with 6:34 to go, but they were outscored 14-2 the rest of the way.
The Eagles led 4-0 before
Stella Parker was able to connect on two free throws at the 5:56 mark of the first quarter. It was 7-2 when
Samantha Taylor converted a layup. Parker put in another free throw, but Ozarks went up 11-5. Rowe hit her first three-pointer and came back with a jumper off the fast break to cut the Eagles lead to 11-10 with 1:45 to go in the first quarter. The Eagles hit another basket and Taylor put in a free throw to make it 13-11 by the end of the period.
Ozarks opened the second period with a basket and Byars answered for the Scots. After another Ozarks' score
Natalya Kaza hit a jumper to make a two-point game. Parker connected on a three-pointer to make it a one-point contest with 6:14 to go, 19-18, but the Eagles scored four points before
Kayla Richardson made a jumper. Ozarks led 27-20 before Rowe hit another three-pointer, but the Eagles continued to lead by eight points when Rowe hit a jumper in the paint to cut the score to 31-25 by halftime.
Lyon College came out in the third period with Parker scoring, but Ozarks scored four straight points before Richardson made a jumper for the Scots. Later, Kaza made a free throw after a technical foul by the Eagles. and Byars hit a jumper to cut the lead to 39-32 with 6:44 to go in the period.Â
Ozarks went up by 10 points before Kaza put in a layup and Byars put in another shot for the Scots, but Eagles went back up by 10 points, 48-38 with 3:31 left in the period. Byars scored inside, but the Eagles went up by 11 points.
Ozarks went ahead by 13, 54-41 with 1:27 left in the third. Kaza made a three-pointer and Rowe connected on a trey to cut the Eagles' lead down to seven points. Then as time was running out, Rowe made a steal and threw up a half-court three-pointer to make it 54-50.
It was 59-50 with 9:14 left in the game when Kaza put in a layup and two minutes later, Byars put in layup and hit a baseline three-pointer to make it a two-point game with 6:34 to go, 59-57 Eagles lead.
The Scots will play the Eagles at Becknell Gymnasium on November 21st in their next game.
