BATESVILLE, Arkansas - Four players scored in double-figures to lead the Lyon College Scots over the Ecclesia Royals 91-80 on Friday night at Becknell Gymnasium.
Frank Toney led the Scots (1-1) with 18 points,
Kylon McCullough scored 16,
Nikola SaSaroga had 14 points and Trent Bell added 11. SaSaroga led in rebounds with nine, while
John Paul Morgan, the Lyon College leader in rebounds, hauled in eight.Â
Ten seconds into the game, Toney made a steal and hit a three-pointer off an assist rom McCullough, then SaSarogra scored inside on a layup off an inside pass from Morgan. SaSarogra scored again on a twisting layup for a 7-2 Lyon lead with just over three minutes gone in the first half.Â
Morgan scored in the paint on a layup off an assist by SaSaroga then SaSaroga scored inside again on the Scots next trip down court to make it 11-5 at the 16:10 mark of the first half. Toney made another three-pointer and
Jaaron Harriott put in a layup, which was followed by a layup from
Jones White for an 18-8 lead with 13:56 to go in the half.
Harriott made a jumper in the lane and White connected on a three-pointer. A steal by
David Baffour led to a layup by McCullough on a fast-break.
Donovynn Lewis came in from then Scots bench to put in a three-pointer for a 28-17 lead at the 10:46 mark and two minutes later, SaSaroga added two free throws, then made one-of-two from the line for a 31-20 Lyon College lead with 7:58 to go in the half.
Isaiah Sweetwine hit one-of-two free throws and Trent Bell put in a driving jump shot for his first points of the half. Two free throws from Toney and one from SaSaroga made for a 37-25 first half lead for Lyon College.Â
McCullough added two free throws, then hit a three-pointer off a fast-break for a 42-29 advantage with 3:33 to play before the break. The Royals came back on a 8-0 run to close to within five points before Baffour made a layup with eight seconds left to give the Scots a 44-37 lead.
Ecclesia made the first basket of the second half to get as close as five points, but Toney converted a three-point play off a layup, the a SaSaroga steal led to a three-pointer from Bell. McCullough followed with a three-pointer off an assist from Toney, then Toney connected on a fast-break layup for a 55-45 Scots lead with 15:30 left in the game. Toney made a steal and hit another fast-break layup and a Block by
Malik Madison led to a layup from McCullough for a 59-45 lead.
McCullough quickly made a steal and passed to Bell for a dunk and Toney hit a three-pointer seconds later for a 64-45 Lyon College advantage. Madison got free on the baseline for a dunk off a pass from McCullough to put the Scots up by 21 points with 13:21 left in the game.Â
Bell hit a jumper, but the Royals scored six straight points before McCullough made a jump shot off the fast-break and Madison put in a shot in the paint. Two minutes later, SaSaroga converted a layup to keep the Scots lead at 19 points, 74-55.Â
Luke Bridges came into the game and promptly put in a layup at the 7:48 mark, then Lewis connected on a three-pointer to make it 79-61. After five straight points from Ecclesia, Bridges connected for a basket inside off an offensive rebound and McCullough drove in for a layup off an assist from Baffour to make it an 83-70 Scots lead with 3:02 to go.
Morgan added a layup off an assist from Baffour, then Baffour hit a short jumper in the paint and Bell scored again for an 89-72 lead with 1:25 left. Ecclesia scored five more points before SaSaroga scored off the offensive glass with nine seconds left.
The Scots will be on the road on Saturday at the University of the Ozarks with a 1 p.m. tip-off.Â
