CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas - After scoring 91 points the night before, the Lyon College Scots men's basketball team found a tougher road on Saturday afternoon against the University of the Ozarks Eagles in Clarksville, Arkansas.
The Scots (1-2) fell behind in the first half 44-27, but played even with the Eagles (2-0) in the second half and came up short 82-65.
Kylon McCullough led Lyon College with 21 points, while
John Paul Morgan added 15 points and
Donovynn Lewis came in off the bench for 12 points.
The Scots shot 40 percent from the field and 64 percent at the free throw line in the game (16-of 25).
Lyon was down 4-0 when Nikoa SaSarogra made two free throws, but that was the only scoring for the Scots until
Malik Madison put in a free throw to cut the Ozarks lead to 10-3. The Eagles went up by 10 points before Trent Bell canned a three-pointer off an assist from
Jones White, then Lewis made a three-pointer to make it a four-point game.
Madison made one of two free throws for the Scots, but Ozarks continued to up its lead to nine points. Lewis made his second trey of the first half and Madison put in a jumper for the Scots to cut the lead back down to four points. Three minutes later, McCullough put in a basket for Lyon to cut the lead back down to four points and he hit a jumper with 9:36 to go before halftime to make it 23-19.
Morgan added a free throw, but the Eagles went on a 14-0 run to lead by 19 points with 6:04 to go in the first half, 39-20. Morgan made a three-pointer for the Scots, then Madison and McCullough added free throws to cut the lead down to 12, 39-27 with 1:37 to play in the half. Ozarks scored the next five points ot lead by 17 at halftime.
Morgan opened the second half with a bucket for Lyon College, then McCullough and SaSaroga scored. The Eagles pushed their lead back to 19 points before Morgan made a layup inside. Morgan and McCullough both made free throws and McCullough had a layup off a fast break to trim the Ozarks lead to 52-40 with 15 minutes to go.
Lewis hit a jump shot to cut the lead down to 10 points, 52-42, but Ozarks made a three-pointer. Morgan scored inside and Lewis put in a jumper in the lane to make it a nine-point game. Seconds later, McCullough hit a three-pointer to cut the lead back down to nine points with 10:24 to play, 58-49. Then the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to push their lead bak to 17 points, 66-49.
Morgan scored inside and McCullough drove the paint for a layup and added two free throws. Bell scored on a jumper and Morgan put in a layup off the fast break to make it a 12-point game again, 71-59 with 3:40 to play. Ozarks scored the next six points before Lewis made a steal and put in a layup. McCullough followed with a layup off a fast break with 1:31 to go to make it 79-63.
