Lyon volleyball defeats Mississippi University for Women 3-0

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College volleyball Scots swept the Mississippi University Owls 3-0 on Wednesday night at Becknell Gymnasium.

The SLIAC match, the Scots (17-14, 9-7) won the first set 25-16, won the second set 25-10 and won the third set 25-20. 

Isabella Beasley led Lyon College kills with 11, while Kylee Sabella and Keeley Beary both had eight kills. Sabella led in aces with three. Beasley and Marti Flores had two aces each. Paeton Tucker and Sabella had one block each, Madeline Hopson had 22 assists, Beasley had 15 and Flores had two. Sabella led in digs with 15, Flores had 14 and Tucker recorded 12 for the match.

The Scots started off the first set with a 4-0 lead on two kills by Beasley with sets from Hopson. MUW came back to tie the set, but Bethany Williams got a kill and Beasley followed after a handling error by the Owls to put Lyon up by three points. Beary got a kill, then Beasley put down a serve ace. Sabella and Beary got kills, and after an attack error by MUW, Sabella had another kill. Janiya Vanderpool recorded two kills and another Owls attack error led to an 18-8 Lyon College lead. Two kills by Sabella, then one from Beasley and Williams quickly made it 23-15. Sets from Hopson and Flores led to kills from Beasley and Vanderpool to finish out the first set.

MUW started off with a 3-1 lead before the Scots kicked in to high gear and had three kills in a row, two by Beasley and one from Sabella off of sets from Hopson and Williams. Williams served an ace and Beary had a kill for a 7-3 lead. After the Owls got a couple of points, Vanderpool had a kill, Sabella served two aces in a row followed by a Vanderpool kill and another ace from Sabella for a 15-5 lead. Beary added a kill, followed by a bad set from MUW. Vanderpool had another kill and Flores. Williams got a kill, Flores served another ace and attack error by the Owls to give Lyon a 22-6 lead. Beasley got a kill and a bad set ended the second set 25-10.

In the third set, three kills from Tucker and one each from Beasley and Williams led to a 6-0 Scots lead early on. Beasley and Sabella both got kills and Tucker served an ace for a 10-2 advantage. MUW rallied back despite another kill from Sabella to make it 11-7. Sabella got another kill and Beary picked up a kill, but the Owls closed in to cut the game to 14-13. Tucker managed two straight kills for Lyon, then a kill from Beary and a ace from Beasley put the Scots up by three points 19-16. A service error from MUW and an attack error gave Lyon a four point cushion. Two more attack errors and two kills from Tucker closed out the set 25-20. 

The Scots will be on the road to Spalding University for a tri-match that includes Fontbonne on Saturday.
