Lyon volleyball defeats Crowley's Ridge 3-1

PARAGOULD, Arkansas - The Lyon College volleyball Scots took a 3-1 win over the host Crowley's Ridge Pioneers on Tuesday night in Paragould in non conference action.

The Scots (13-14, 7-5) won the first set 25-12 and the second set 25-22 before dropping the third set 25-19. Lyon rallied to take the fourth set 27-25 to win the match.

Leaders for the Scots were Kylee Sabella with 21 kills, Paeton Tucker had nine and Isabella Beasley had eight kills. Sabella led in aces with two, while Madeline Hopson and Tucker had one ace apiece. Keeley Berry led Lyon with seven blocks, while Bethany Williams and Tucker both had three blocks in the contest. Hopson led in assists with 25, Lauren White added 19 and Marti Flores had three. Tucker led in digs with 23, Sabella had 22 and Erin Haigwood had 12 digs.

In the early part of the first set, the Scots and Pioneers battled back and forth, but Lyon managed to moved out to a 12-5 lead on kills by Janiya Vanderpool, and three more from Beasley. Sabella had three straight kills and Beasley added another for a 19-7 lead, then Sabella had a kill, Hopson had a service ace and Vanderpool added another kill. Sabella served an ace and Tucker made a kill for the final point of the set.

In the second set, Lyon trailed by two until Vanderpool had two kills in a row to tie the game. CRC errors allowed Lyon to inch out to a two point lead and kept it there on kills from Tucker and Sabella. Following an attack error, Vanderpool got another kill for the Scots, but the Pioneers closed back into within one 16-15. Tucker stepped up for another hard kill, then later Sabella got a kill to make it a two point lead for the Scots again, 19-17. CRC tied the set at 19-19 and took a two point lead, but Beary had a kill and three attack errors by CRC handed the set to Lyon College.

The Pioneers regained their composure and won the third set by six points and that set up a thrilling fourth and final set. 

Sabella started off with two kills for the Scots, but CRC went up 8-3 early on. Sabella made two more kills, Vanderpool had a kill, Sabella had a service ace and another kill from Vanderpool led to an ace serve from Flores and a kill from Tucker to tie the game at 12-12.  Errors on CRC kept the game close later on until Tucker served an ace and Sabella got two kills to put Lyon up 20-18. The Pioneers came back to go ahead by one 21-20, but an error and kills from Sabella and Tucker put Lyon back in front 25-24. A service error on the Scots tied the set, but Tucker and Beasley got kills to finish off the Pioneers and win the match. 

The Scots return to SLIAC on Thursday night in Fulton, Missouri against Westminster at 7 p.m. followed by SLIAC tri-match action at Greenville, Illinois on Saturday.
