Byars, Tate lead Scots women over Hannibal-LaGrange

BATESVILLE, ARK. - Allison Byars scored 22 points and Paige Tate added 21 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Lyon College women Scots over the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans 92-62 on Saturday afternoon in American Midwest Conference play at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (6-6, 5-3) led 26-12 after the first quarter and 56-31 at halftime. Savanna Lopez scored 12 points and Natalya Kaza added 10 points coming in off the Scots bench during the game. 

Lyon College scored 12 points in the paint, had 30 points off of turnovers, 25 second chance points and 29 points from its bench. 

Tate and Byars put the Scots up 5-0 and Hannibal came back to take a 6-5 lead and led again at 8-7, but from there, Lyon College went on a 16-2 run to end the first quarter leading by 14 points. Tate hit a jumper, Byars put in a layup and Mari-Hanna Newsom made a three-pointer during the run. Lopez and Kaza both added baskets before the end of the period.

The Scots increased their lead to 21 points when Newsom made a three-pointer to make it 33-12. Byars made a trey, Baham hit a jumper and Kaza hit a three-pointer for a 43-22 lead midway through the second period. Ashley Jones scored, Emily Harrison put in a free throw, Kaza made another three-pointer, Tate hit a jumper, Erin Haigwood put in a bank shot and Byars knocked down a three-pointer for a 25-point halftime lead.

Tate and Jones scored for the Scots to open the third quarter, then Byars had two shots fall in a sequence that included a three-point play, Lopez scored and Blake Green hit a jumper. Tate scored inside and added two free throws for a 76-52 lead for Lyon.

Newsom made a three-pointer midway through the four quarter to give the Scots a 25-point lead, 87-62. Three minutes later, Baham made a trey for a 28-point lead and Lopez put in a turnaround jump shot with 41 seconds left to push the Scots lead to 30.
