WALNUT RIDGE, ArK. - Five Lyon College Scots scored in double-figures on Tuesday night, but it wasn't enough in a 91-80 loss to the Williams Baptist Eagles in American Midwest Conference play.
Allison Byars led the Scots (6-7, 5-4) with 19 points.
Paige Tate and
Natalya Kaza each had 14 points,
Kristen Baham scored 13 points and
Savanna Lopez scored 10 points.
Lyon College led most of the game, leading 25-19 after the first quarter and holding a 44-40 advantage at halftime. Williams Baptist outscored Lyon 25-20 in the third quarter to lead 65-64 and outscored the Scots 26-16 in the final period.
Williams Baptist led 5-0 before
Mari-Hanna Newsom scored. Byars made two free throws, Tate hit a jumper in the lane and Byars put in a layup. Lopez put in a layup with 2:57 to go in the first quarter for a 14-14 tie and made the free throw to complete a three-point play and put Lyon College in front. Byars scored five points in a row and Kaza made a three-pointer from the wing. Later, Lopez gave the Scots a 10-point lead on a layup.
Kayla Richardson and Tate made free throws to put the Scots up 32-21 with 7:24 to go before halftime. Baham made a three-pointer and Kaza followed with another three to make it 40-31. Kaza added the final points of the half for Lyon on a layup, but Williams Baptist closed back to within four points.
Baham, Richardson and Tate scored to make it a 50-42 lead early in the third quarter. The Eagles got to within one point at the 3:57 mark, 55-54 but Kaza made two free throws and Newsom made a three-pointer. Kaza added two more free throws for a seven point lead, but Williams Baptist came back to take a one-point lead on a free throw with five seconds left.
Williams Baptist led by as much as seven points in the fourth quarter before Baham scored on a layup. The game went back and forth until the Eagles moved out to a four point lead with 2:15 to go on free throws. Williams Baptist pushed its lead to double-digits at the free throw line in the final two minutes.
