Lyon College women's basketball defeats Harris-Stowe State

ST. LOUIS, Missouri - Allison Byars scored 22 points, Savanna Lopez added 20 and Paige Tate scored 11 points to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets 67-52 in the American Midwest Conference on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis.

Lyon (8-10, 7-7) led 18-15 after the first quarter and held a 32-27 halftime advantage. It was 45-40 after the third quarter, then the Scots started to pull away for the win. 

Byars, Tate and Kirsten Baham scored to put the Scots up early after Harris-Stowe took a 3-0 lead. Lopez scored, Mari-Hanna Newsom made a three-pointer, the Lopez and Tate scored to make it 17-9. The Hornets outscored the Scots 6-1 in the final minute and a half of the first period.

Byars converted a layup and Harris-Stowe answered with a score, but Lopez made two jumpers in a row and Tate scored on a layup inside for a 26-17 Scots lead. Tate put in another basket and Newsom made a three-pointer and a jump shot to put the Scots up by 11 points, 32-21. 

Harris-Stowe came out in the third period and took a one-point lead 35-34 in the first three minutes. Lyon scored the next six points, with Byars scoring, Natalya Kaza made two free throws and Lopez put in a jumper to put the Scots up by five. The Hornets got within one point with 1:25 to go in the quarter, but inside baskets from Lopez and Tate secured a 45-40 lead.

Lopez made two free throws to start the fourth period, then put in a basket and made two more free throws for a 51-42 lead. Byars made two free throws, Baham scored and Byars put in a layup and converted another layup on a steal she made. Baham made a free throw and Byars added two more from the line to end a 16-2 run and lead 61-42 with 4:17 to go.
