COLUMBIA, Missouri -
Savanna Lopez scored 19 points and
Paige Tate put in 18 points to lead the Lyon College Scots in an 80-59 American Midwest Conference loss to the Columbia College Cougars on Thursday night.
The Scots (7-10, 6-7) trailed 21-17 after the first quarter and 41-33 at halftime. The Cougars outscored Lyon 19-12 in the third quarter and 20-14 in the fourth.
Columbia's three-point shooting gave them the lead early in the first quarter, but baskets from
Allison Byars, a three-point play from
Kristen Baham, a layup by Tate and another basket from Byars tied the game at 9-9.
Kayla Richardson hit a shot seconds later to tie the game 11-11. Tate and Lopez scored inside and
Natalya Kaza put in two free throws to cut the lead to four points.
Columbia increased its lead to 11 points on its first three shots of the second quarter. Tate made a free throw and Richardson scored in the paint for Lyon. Tate scored again on layup and Lopez scored on a turnaround on consecutive possessions. The Scots made small run with a jumper by Tate, a layup from Lopez and a three-pointer by Baham to make it 39-33.Â
Two three-pointers to start the third quarter put the Cougars back up by double-digits. Baskets by Lopez and Tate couldn't account for Columbia's early run that led to a 21-point lead, 60-39. Tate made two free throws and Lopez scored twice to cut the lead to 15 points.
Tate made three free throws, Richardson put in a basket, Baham made a free throw, Byars made a free throw and Tate scored for Lyon in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Lopez put in a basket,
Blake Green put in two free throws and Lopez added the final free throw with four seconds left.
