BATESVILLE, Ark. - After a slow start shooting-wise in the game, the Lyon College Scots (7-9, 6-6) fell behind 21-10 after the first quarter and ultimately dropped a 70-54 game to the American Midwest Conference leading Missouri Baptist Spartans on Saturday afternoon at Becknell Gymnasium.
Allison Byars led Lyon College with 12 points and seven rebounds,
Savanna Lopez added 11 points and eight rebounds and
Paige Tate scored 11 points. The Scots shot 32.1 percent from the field, 20 percent on three-point shots and 61.5 percent at the free throw line.
The Scots had a 2-0 lead on Tate's jumper in the first 40 seconds, but Missouri Baptist scored 11 straight points before Byars made two free throws. The Spartans held a 12-point lead when
Mari-Hanna Newsom made a jumper.
Kristen Baham hit a three-pointer, but MBU led by 11 points.
The Scots fought back with another basket from Newsom and two free throws from
Kayla Richardson. Tate hit a jumper and
Natalya Kaza made a field goal to cut the Spartans lead to 23-18 with 5:58 to go before halftime. Lyon trailed by 12 points later in the quarter, but Newsom started a five-point run for the Scots and Tate scored the next three points to end the half trailing 32-25.
Byars converted on a layup for the Scots first points of the second half at the 4:48 mark of the third period after MBU built another 12-point lead. Byars made two free throws and Lopez scored inside to trim the margin to seven, but in two minutes, the Spartans led by 11, 43-32. Byars scored two baskets in a row, but Missouri Baptist scored five straight points to lead 48-35 by the end of the third period.
Tate made two free throws, but it didn't slow down the Spartans, who increased its lead to 20 points 61-41 with 5:43 to go. The lead got as much as 23 points until Lopez scored two baskets.
Ashley Jones came in off the bench for a Lyon College basket and
Blake Green hit a three-pointer. Byars added a basket and Green added a free throw to end the scoring for the Scots.
