CONWAY, AR. - The Lyon College Scots volleyball team opened American Midwest
Conference play with a victory over Central Baptist College Friday night in Conway, Arkansas at
A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse.
The Scots (7-7) won the first set 25-17, won the second set 27-25, dropped the third set 25-13,
lost the fourth set 25-22, and won the final set 15-11 to win the match 3-2.
Leading the way in kills for Lyon College was
Kylee Sabella with 17 while
Samantha Ferguson
contributed 10, and
Isabella Beasley added eight of her own in the victory.
Erin Haigwood led
the Scots in digs with 24, Sabella collected 13 and
Cassidy Garrett notched 10 in the hard
fought victory.
Cassidy Garrett led the Scots in assists with 24,
Madeline Hopson added 16, and Erin
Haigwood collected three in the victory.
Samantha Ferguson led the defensive with eight blocks,
Beasley blocked six, and Szymanska contributed four in the match.
In the first set, the Scots and Mustangs went back and forth when Lyon took the lead 7-6 from a
kill by Sabella. After an assist block from Szymanska and Beasley, the Scots rallied to score 5
straight points behind Haigwood to make the score 19-14. In the run, Ferguson and Beasley
both had kills with both assists coming by way of Garrett. Lyon went on to win the first set 25-17
by a kill from Sabella.
The second set started off back and forth until a kill by Sabella that gave the Scots the 6-5
advantage. The Scots rallied behind Hopson for three straight points from two kills from Paeton
Tucker to make the score 9-5 Lyon. After two errors by the Mustangs, the Scots took a 24-22
lead. The Mustangs tied the set at 24-24 to force extra serves. Lyon went on to win the second
set 27-25 after back to back kills by Sabella.
In the third set, the Mustangs got off to a 2-0 lead after two kills. The Scots fought back to tie the
set at 5-5 from a kill by Sabella. The Mustangs went on to achieve a 19-6 advantage. Lyon
fought hard but dropped the set 25-13.
In the fourth set, Central Baptist got off to a fast 5-0 start after four kills. Tucker led the Scots on
a 4-0 run to make the score 4-5. Lyon went on to score four straight points from kills by Sabella
and Beasley, and a service ace by Szymanska to tie the set at 8-8. The set continued to go
back and forth until an attack by Haigwood to tie the set at 20-20. Lyon dropped the set 25-22.
In the fifth set, after a kill by
Jayden Hughes to make the score 3-4 Mustangs,
Kylee Sabella
rallied the Scots on a 4-0 run with a service ace to give Lyon the 7-4 advantage. The Mustangs
went on to tie the score at 7-7 after a service ace. After a kill from Sabella, the Scots increased
their lead to 13-9. The Scots ended up winning the set 15-11 to win the match 3 sets to 2.
With the victory, the Scots improved their record to 7-7 and 1-0 in conference play. The Lyon
College volleyball team returns to action on September 27 facing Bethel University (Tenn.) in a
non-conference matchup starting at 6:30 p.m. in Batesville, Arkansas at Becknell Gymnasium.
