Scots softball splits double-header with Missouri Baptist

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Lyon College softball Scots dropped an 8-0 decision to the visiting Missouri Baptist Spartans in Game 1 of an American Midwest Conference double-header, but came back to win a thrilling 12-11, 10-inning game to earn the split decision. 

The Scots (4-16, 4-4) fell to Missouri Baptist in the first game 8-0 and had only one hit. Megan Englehardt had the only hit for Lyon College in the game.

The excitement came in the second game when Geogria Holzer put down a bunt single back to the Missouri Baptist pitcher who tossed the ball at home plate as Addison Harmon raced home and slid in for the game-winning run.

Missouri Baptist led 5-0 until the bottom of the third inning when Kassidy Robinson doubled to left field to score Melonie Mooney and Emily Martinez. Harmon singled to left field to bring in Robinson and Jasmine Carlos advanced to second on a wild pitch that Harmon scored on. Georgia Holzer hit a sacrifice grounder to the shortstop and Englehardt scored to tie the game at 5-5.

The Spartans (12-10, 3-1) scored in the top of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, though, Harmon doubled in Martinez and Engelhardt doubled to left field to bring in Harmon for a 7-7 tie.

In the bottom of the sixth, Englehardt singled to right field and scored Mooney for an 8-7 Scots lead. 

Missouri Baptist came back to retake the lead 10-8 in the top of the seventh inning.  But the Scots came back when Arrambide doubled in Holzer and Harmon singled in Arrambide to tie the game at 10-10. 

In the top of the 10th with international tie-breaking rules in effect, Missouri Baptist scored to take an 11-10 lead., but Lyon scored twice when Robins scored on a sacrifice ground out and then Holzer's bunt scored Harmon to win the game.

Next up for the Scots softball team will be a home-stand on Tuesday against Central Baptist College beginning at 2 p.m.
