COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Lyon College Scots women's basketball team upset the Stephens Stars on Saturday afternoon 74-69 giving the Stars their first loss in the American Midwest Conference.
The Scots (4-6, 3-3) led 22-14 after the first quarter, then led 39-28 at halftime. The Stars came back to outscore Lyon College 22-7 in the third quarter to go up 50-46, but the Scots retook the lead midway through the fourth quarter and held on to it at the free throw line.
Allison Byars led Lyon College with 22 points, while
Mari-Hanna Newsom added 16 points.
Kristen Baham and
Paige Tate both scored 10 points each and
Kayla Richardson scored nine in the win.Â
Richardson, Newsom and Byars created a 9-2 lead for the Scots. After Stephens tied the game at 14-14, Newsom made two three-pointers and Richardson put in a basket to extend the Scots lead to eight points.
Tate, Byars and Lopez scored baskets in the second quarter to keep the Lyon College lead at nine points. The Scots led by as much as 14 points with 1:24 to go in the first half, 39-25 on two free throws from Newsom.
Stephens erased an 11-point Lyon College lead in the third quarter and took a 50-46 lead.Â
Baham's basket with 6:47 to go in the game tied the score at 55-55. Byars gave the Scots the lead on a three-point play. Free throws from Baham, Newsom and Tate secured the win.
