Scots women's basketball falls at home to Columbia College

BATESVILLE, Ark. -  Mari-Hanna Newsom hit for a season-high 20 points on Thursday night in American Midwest Conference action against the Columbia Cougars at Becknell Gymnasium.

Columbia won the game 82-68 after fighting back in the second half to take the lead. The Scots (1-4, 1-2) led 46-32 at halftime and Newsom was instrumental in the Lyon College lead by making three three-pointers in a row. Newsom made six of 10 three-pointers for the game.

The Scots outscored the Cougars 17-12 and 29-20 in the first two quarters. Columbia came out of halftime and decisively won the third quarter 22-9 to cut the lead to one point, 55-54. The Cougars opened up their double-digit lead in the fourth quarter by outscoring Lyon College 28-13.

Along with Newsom, Paige Tate and ALlison Byars both scored 11 points each. Kayla Richardson added eight points and Natalya Kaza came in off the bench to score seven points. Autumn Enote made two-of-three three-pointers for six points and Kristen Baham finished with five.

The Scots scored 18 points off of 11 Columbia turnovers, had five second chance points and got 13 from their bench. 

Richardson led off the game with a steal for Lyon College and an assist to Newsom for a three-pointer. Tate added two free throws to put the Scots up 5-0 and Baham hit a jumper. Byars scored for Lyon, but Columbia cut the lead to two points before Baham made a three-pointer. Tate put in a free throw and Byars sank a layup with six seconds left to put Lyon College ahead 17-12.

The Cougars got as close as two points early, but Newsom made three three-pointers in a row to push the Lyon College lead to 26-15. Richardson added a jumper for a 10-point advantage, then Kaza hit a three-pointer for the Scots. Kaza added two free throws and hit a short jump shot. Enote made a three-pointer to put the Scots up 38-27 with 3:23 to go before halftime. Newsom made two free throws and Enote canned another three-pointer. Byars made three-of-four free throws in the final 15 seconds to give the Scots a 14-point lead.

The Cougars went on a 13-2 run in the first part of the third quarter to close the Scots lead to 48-45. Richardson scored and Newsom made a three-pointer. Tate scored, but the Cougars came back to cut the deficit to one point by the end of the period.

Tate scored again to start the fourth quarter and boost the Lyon College lead to three points. Richardson made two shots in a row, but Columbia tied the game at 61-61 with 7:10 to go. Tate put the Scots back in front with a free throw, but the Cougars tied the game at 62-62 and briefly took the lead before Newsom made another three-pointer to give Lyon College a 65-64 advantage. 
Columbia went on an 18-1 run over the a four-minute span to take an 82-66 lead.
