QUITMAN, Ark. – Lyon College made history this past weekend by bring the USA Archery tournaments to Arkansas for the first time.
On Saturday, November 5, archers from around the state were gathered together to participate in the first-ever USA Archery 3D tournament.
"We have laid the foundation on which to build the archery program within the state of Arkansas and will attract other states who wish to compete with us," Lyon College Archery Coach Travis Linville said.
Lyon college is the only college in the state which offers scholarships for archery. Arkansas State-Three Rivers offers the sport as a club and participated in the tournament.
Other colleges were very appreciative for the opportunity Lyon College gave them to participate in the event.
"This tournament was a great opportunity for our students to meet other archers in the state. I can tell from my team's enthusiasm on the trip home that they really enjoyed the competition and the knowledge gained from this experience was invaluable", said ASU Three Rivers head Coach Bob Starkey.
Linville also serves as the USA Archery state coordinator plans to hold regular tournaments, which flow into the US Olympic platform. The Scots schedule includes both the indoor and outdoor style tournaments.
Gold medal winners from Saturday for Lyon College was Preston Linville in the Men's Olympic Recurve; Delacey Kell in the Women's Compound event; and Gavin Malloy in the Compound Fixed Pins shoot.
Silver Medal winner was Carrie Bennett in the Women's Compound event.

"With this tournament I think the archer's self- confidence has improved and they are already setting personal goals for Lyon's next event," Starkey said.
Parents also added their appreciation for the event coming to Arkansas.
"Coach Linville has worked with my archers for years and always has their best interest at heart," said Brian Williams. "We are excited that Lyon College will be able to offer them another platform of competition and growth. We intend on making some of them future Scots."
