ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Harris-Stowe Hornets and the Lyon College Scots battled on Saturday for seeding in the upcoming 2022 American Midwest Conference Volleyball championship tournament.
The Scots won the first set 25-17, but the host Hornets won the next three straight sets 25-21, 25-21 and 25-21 at the Emerson Performance Center in St. Louis, Missouri to take the sixth seed into next week's tournament. With the loss, Lyon College (10-16, 4-6) will be the eight-seeded team and play the No.14 Columbia College Cougars in Columbia at 7 p.m. on November 8.
Isabella Beasley led the Scots in kills with 12, while
Paeton Tucker and
Kylee Sabella both had nine.
Layla Wilson led the team with four ace serves, while Sabella and
Natalia Szymanska had two aces each. Tucker led in blocks with two, Beasley had one and
Jayden Hughes had one block. Wilson led with 29 assists,
Cassidy Garrett had four and
Erin Haigwood had three. Haigwood led in digs with 33, Sabella had six and Tucker three for the contest.Â
The first set, the Scots tied the game 1-1 on a Tucker kill, then tied the game on an attack error by Harris-Stowe. A service error made it 3-3 and a kill from Sabella tied it at 4-4. A kill by Hughes put Lyon College ahead, but a service error tied it at 5-5. Another service error by the Hornets tied the game 6-6, Tucker made a kill, then had an ace serve to put the Scots up by two 8-6 and
Samantha Ferguson got a kill to make it 9-8, but Harris-Stowe tied the game at 9-9 on a service ace. The game was tied again at 11-11 on an attack error by Lyon College. Another attack error tied the set at 13-13, but a Harris-Stowe had a service error and back-to-back kills from Beasley and Sabella put the Scots up 16-13. Another attack error by the Hornets and a kill by Sabella made it 18-13. A block by Sabella for a point coupled with another Hornets attack error made it a 20-13 contest. Then Szymanska added two kills and Sabella had another and two more errors on the Hornets gave Lyon College the first set.
The second set was tied at 5-5, 9-9 and 10-10 early on, but Harris-Stowe got two points in a row and held a 15-11 lead. A kill by Hughes made it 15-12, but the Hornets answered with a kill. Szymanska made a kill off a set by Garrett to make it 16-13, but Harris-Stowe went ahead 19-15. The Scots got as close as one points on attack errors by the Hornets, 21-20, but a service error and two kills by HSSU got them within one point of the set win. Beasley got a kill for Lyon College, but a block for a point by the Hornets ended the set.
The Hornets trailed 2-1 in the third set after Haigwood got a service ace and Ferguson made a kill. Another service ace by Haigwood and a kill by Ferguson off a set from Wilson made it a 4-2 Lyon College lead. Sabella had a kill, but attack errors by the Scots allowed Harris-Stowe to take the lead 7-6. The Hornets added three more points before Wilson got a kill to make it 10-7. Beasley got a kill to cut the lead to two, 10-8 and Ferguson got another kill to make it 11-9. Harris-Stowe led 15-11 at one point before Tucker got a kill. A few minutes later Beasley got a kill to cut the Hornets lead to 19-15. Sabella's kill made it a 20-16 contest and another kill from Beasley cut the score to 22-17. Tucker got two kills in a row to cut the lead to three points, but a Harris-Stowe kill ended the set with the win.
The Hornets jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set before two kills from Beasley and attack errors on Harris-Stowe closed the gap to 8-6. Beasley got another kill and Sabella had a service error to tie the set at 10-10. A minute later, Tucker made a kill to tie the game 11-11. A service ace by
Natalie Siler put Lyon College up by one point, but the Hornets got a kill to tie it at 12-12. The set was tied at 13-13, 14-14 and 15-15 before Harris-Stow started to pull away with seven straight points to lead 22-15. Beasley got a kill, Szymanska served an ace, Wilson got a kill and two attack errors made it a 23-20 contest. Ferguson got a kill after a Hornets' point and Harris-Stowe put the set and match away with a kill.
Lyon College will now enter the AMC volleyball championships on Tuesday night with a visit to #14 Columbia College.
