No. 17 Missouri Baptist defeats Lyon College volleyball 3-0

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Lyon College volleyball Scots battled the No. 17 Missouri Baptist Spartans close for one set, then the American Midwest Conference's second place team came back to take Friday night's match 3-0 at the Carl and Deloris Petty SRC at Missouri Baptist University.

The Scots (10-15, 4-5) lost 25-20, 25-15 and 25-10.

Kylee Sabella led Lyon College with eight kills, while Isabella Beasley and Paeton Tucker had three kills each. Samantha Ferguson had two blocks for points, Beasley and Jayden Hughes both had one. Layla Wilson led in assists with 11, Cassidy Garrett had three assists and Erin Haigwood had two. Again, Haigwood led in digs with 17, Sabella had 12 and Tucker finished with six.

In set one, the Scots got off to a fast start with a 2-0 lead on two attack errors by the Spartans. Missouri Baptist came back to take a 7-5 lead, but kills from Beasley, Sabella and another attack error tied the game at 7-7. The Spartans scored the next six points to go up 13-7, but two service errors and an attack error by MBU followed by a kill from Sabella made it a 16-10 contest. Two more kills from Sabella helped the Scots get to within five points, 19-14, then kills from Natalia Szymanska and Tucker closed it to 21-17. Ferguson got a kill off an assists from Wilson to keep Lyon College within four points, but a late kill ended the set for the Spartans.

In the second set, Tucker had a kill to tie the game early on 1-1. Kills from Sabella and Beasley tied the game at 4-4. A service error and an attack error by the Spartans put Lyon ahead 6-4, but the game was quickly tied at 6-6, at 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9. Missouri Baptist edged out to a three point lead, but a kill from Sabella got one of them back and minutes later a second kill from Sabella cut the Spartans lead to 13-12. Hughes got a kill to make it 14-13, but MBU outscored Lyon College 11-2 to take the second set.

The third set began with Beasley and Sabella getting kills for a 2-1 lead, then Ferguson got a kill to tie the game 3-3. The Scots trailed 10-6 when Missouri Baptist went on a 10-1 run to go up 20-7. The Spartans finished off the match with a kill.
