NEVADA, Missouri - Allison Byars led four Lyon College Scots in double-figures with 30 points in an 89-75 win over the Cottey Comets in the American Midwest Conference opener at the Hinkhouse on Thursday night.
Paige Tate and Kayla Richardson scored 12 points each, while Erin Haigwood added 10 points for Lyon College. Kristen Baham and Mari-Hanna Newsom both had nine points, while Savanna Lopez scored four and Autumn Enote had a basket. The Scots (1-2, 1-0) outscored Cottey 24-10 in the first quarter and led 39-27 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Lyon College led 68-53.
For the game, the Scots shot 56.4 percent from the field, made 30.8 percent of their three-pointers (4-of-13) and made 22-of-34 free throws. Lyon College scored 46 points in the paint, 20 points off of 19 Cottey turnovers, had 22 second chance points and got 17 points from the bench. The largest lead, 21 points 88-69, came with 2:01 to go in the game.
Byars and Tate scored the first two baskets of the game to put the Scots up early. Richardson put in a layup, Byars made two free throws, Newsom put in a jumper and Byars made a three-pointer for a 13-6 Lyon College lead. Haigwood made a move for a layup and added a free throw to complete a three-point play, then baskets by Lopez, Tate and Baham closed out an 11-0 run to end the first quarter.
Newsom's layup with 8:16 to go before halftime was the first points for Lyon College in the second period. Two free throws from Byars and a layup from Newsom made it a 30-14 Scots lead. Byars, Richardson and Tate all scored inside, then Enote scored and Lopez put in a layup for a 12-point Lyon College lead at halftime.
Cottey got as close as six points in the first three minutes of the third quarter, 43-37. Baham made a three-pointer, Richardson put in a free throw, Tate scored inside, Richardson put in a layup, Newsom connected on a three-pointer and Byars put in another layup for a 56-41 Scots lead. Byars scored on a three-pointer, a layup and four free throws, while Haigwood put in a basket and Lyon College led 68-53.
Richardson started off the fourth quarter with the first five points for the Scots. Byars scored inside, Haigwood put in another basket and Tate scored to make it an 80-63 lead. From there, Lyon College held off a late run by the Comets with made free throws from Baham, Haigwood and Byars.
