ST. LOUIS, Missouri - The Lyon College volleyball defeated the University of Health, Science and Pharmacy 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis.
The Scots (9-10, 3-2) beat the Eutectics 27-25 in the first set, lost the second set 25-15, came back to take the third set 25-22 and dominated the fourth set 25-17 to win the American Midwest Conference match 3-1.
Paeton Tucker led the Scots with 10 kills in the match, while Natalia Szymansk had nine kills and
Jayden Hughes finished with eight. Hughes and
Kylee Sabella both had two ace serves for Lyon College, while Tucker added one. Sabella led in blocks with nine, Tucker had six and
Samantha Ferguson had five.
Cassidy Garrett led in assists with 26,
Layla Wilson had 10 and
Isabella Beasley came up with seven assists.
Erin Haigwood led the Scots in digs with 38, Tucker had 19 and Hughes finished with 19 digs, as well
Lyon College trailed 6-1 to start the first set, but kills from
Natalia Szymanska, Hughes, Beasley and Tucker tied the contest at 11-11. Three straight errors by UHSP allowed the Scots to take a 14-11 lead, but Pharmacy came back to go ahead 21-19 before Hughes had three kills for the Scots to put Lyon College ahead by two.
Later in the set, Besley and Tukcer had kills to tie the game at 25-25, then an ace serve from Sabella and a kill from Tucker gave the Scots the victory.
In the second set, the Eutectics led by as much as 10 points and ended up winning 25-15.
However, in the third set, kills from Szymanska, Hughes and Tucker gave the Scots a 13-12 advantage. Two straight kills from Ferguson and another kill from Szymanska made it 17-14. Later in the set, Sabella got two kills in a row for Lyon College led to an error by the Eutectics for a 25-22 win.
In the fourth set, the Scots jumped out to a 4-0 led on kills by Beasley and Tucker. After Ferguson got a kill, two straight errors by UHSP led to a 9-5 advantage. Later in the set, Sabella had two kills to make it 16-10. Hughes had a kill, Tucker served an ace and Szymanska to end the match for the Scots 25-17.
