Lyon College Volleyball team falls at Freed-Hardeman 3-1

HENDERSON, TENN. -  A long drive to Henderson, Tennessee after a solid practice through the week didn't serve the dividends the Lyon College Scots volleyball team wanted against Freed-Hardeman on Thursday night.

The Scots (9-11, 3-2)  dropped a 3-1 decision to FHU. Lyon College dropped the first two sets 25-22 and 25-17 before rebounding and taking the third set 25-18. Ultimately, after fighting hard in the third set, the Scots lost the fourth set 25-17.

Kylee Sabella led Lyon College with 16 kills, Paeton Tucker had six and Jayden Hughes finished with three. Erin Haigwood led with three ace serves, Sabella had two and Tucker had one for the Scots. Hughes, Sabella and Natalia Szymanska all had two blocks each, while Layla Wilson led the assist category with 12, Cassidy Garrett ahd 11 and Madeline Hopson had four assists. Haigwood led in digs with 16, Tucker had 13 and Sabella finished with 10 for Lyon College.

In total, the Scots had 31 kills and 32 attack errors.

Early in the first set, Sabella had a kill and a service ace to make it 5-3, but after FHU came back to tie the set at 5-5.Both teams battled through service and attack errors tying the set at 7-7, 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11 until Freed-Hardeman moved out to a 15-12 lead. Tucker got a kill and two errors by FHU let the Scots tie the set again, 15-15. Following two more ties, Isabella Beasley got a kill to keep Lyon College to within a point 20-19 and Sabella's kill minutes later made it 21-20. The Scots tied the set at 22-22 on a bad set by FHU, but Lyon College had two attack errors and allowed a kill to lose by three.

Early in the second set, FHU made two service errors to give Lyon College a 4-3 lead. Later Haigwood served an ace and Sabella got a kill for a 6-4 lead. Freed broke a 7-7 tie and outscored the Scots 8-1 to go up 15-8. Hughes and Tucker got kills to try and rally Lyon College, but FHU ran out to a 22-12 advantage and despite three kills from Sabella, Freed-Hardeman won by eight.

After falling behind 10-5, Hughes and Szymanska got a block, Tucker made a kill shot, Hughes and Samantha Ferguson had a block and an attack error from FHU put the Scots back in the set. Tucker had another kill, Beasley and Ferguson combined for a block to tie the third set 11-11. Beasley had another block to tie it 12-12. Finally, Lyon College moved out to a six point lead on a kill from Sabella, four attack errors by FHU and another kill from Sabella made it 20-14. Tucker had a kill and Sabella served an ace to end the set 25-18 for the Scots.

In the fourth set, FHU jumped to a 7-1 lead before Sabella got a kill for Lyon College. Beasley made a kill, Hughes had a kill shot, but that only got the Scots to within four points 10-6. Freed-Hardeman led 16-9 when Tucker served an ace for the Scots. Haigwood followed with two straight ace serves, but FHU stayed ahead by four points 20-16 despite two more kills from Sabella. Two attack errors ended the game 25-17.
