HANNIBAL, Missouri - The Lyon College volleyball team was defeated by the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans 3-0 in American Midwest Conference play in Hannibal on Friday night.
The Scots (8-10, 2-2) fell 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18 in straight sets to the Trojans (5-18, 2-3).
Paeton Tucker and
Kylee Sabella led the Scots with nine kills in the match, while
Jayden Hughes added seven.
Erin Haigwood and Sabella both served one ace. Sabella had two blocks and Tucker was credited with one.Â
Cassidy Garrett led Lyon College with 17 assists,
Layla Wilson had 10 and
Madeline Hopson finished with six assists. Haigwood led in digs with 13, while Tucker and Hughes both had 12 each.
The Scots led early in the first set 2-1 on a kill by
Isabella Beasley, but Hannibal-LaGrange took a two to three point lead for most of the set until an attack error by the Trojans allowed a 16-16 tie. Hughes got a kill to tie the set at 17-17 and Hughes killed again for an 18-18 tie. Tucker got two kills to keep the contest close 21-20 and 22-21, but the Trojans managed to get the final points to win by three.
In the second set, a kill by Sabella tied it at 8-8 and Hughes killed a shot for a 9-8 Lyon College lead. Haigwood served an ace and another kill from Hughes made it 11-8, but Hannibal-LaGrange managed to tie the game and take the lead 15-14. From there, the Trojans outscored the Scots 10-4 to win.
An attack error off a
Madeline Hopson serve for the Scots tied the third set at 5-5 early on and a kill by Tucker made it 6-6. Hannibal-LaGrange went up 13-8, but a kill from
Natalia Szymanska closed the gap to 15-14 for Lyon College. That was as close as the Scots would get in the final frame.
Lyon College travels to St. Louis on Saturday to take on the University of Health, Science and Pharmacy in another AMC matchup.
