BATESVILLE, Ark. - The 14th-ranked Columbia Cougars upended the Lyon College volleyball Scots 3-0 on Friday night at Becknell Gymnasium in American Midwest Conference action.
The Scots (10-13, 4-3) lost 25-18, 25-10 and 25-17 to the Cougars, who remain in first place in the AMC standings. Lyon College is tied for fourth place with Stephens College coming to Batesville on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Kylee Sabella led the Lyon College with seven kills,
Paeton Tucker added six kills and
Isabella Beasley had five.
Madeline Hopson and
Cassidy Garrett both served an ace, while Beasley and
Samantha Ferguson had two blocks and
Jayden Hughes had one.
Layla Wilson led in assists with 12, Garrett added eight and Hopson had three assists.
Erin Haigwood led in digs with 27, while Tucker and Sabella both had nine digs each.
In the first set, Columbia led 8-3, but Lyon College fought back with a kill from Hughes and one from Tucker to cut the score to 9-6. The Cougars moved out to a five-point advantage, but Tucker had a kill and by Beasley made it 15-10. Kills fro Tucker and Ferguson made it 22-13, then Garrett served an ace. Columbia went on to take the first set 25-18.
The Cougars led 4-0 in the second set before a service error gave the Scots a point. It was 13-1 whe Sabella got a kill and Beasley made it 14-3. Hughes got a kill to make it 15-4, but Columbia went ahead 19-5. Hughes and Tucker both got kills for Lyon College and Beasley added a kill to make it 24-10.
In the third set, Ferguson set the tone with consecutive kills, Beasley got a kill, then Sabella joined the spike group to give the Scots a 4-3 lead. Sabella had two more kills, but the Cougars were able to move out to a 10-7 lead. Sabella had two kills in a row to make it 14-12 and Tucker's kill tied the game 15-15. Columbia moved out to a 22-17 lead and went on to get the final three points for the match win.
