Scots volleyball defeats Williams Baptist in straight sets on Pink Out night for Breast Cancer Awareness

BATESVILLE, ARK. - The Lyon College volleyball Scots got a much needed victory in the American Midwest Conference by sweeping the Williams Baptist Eagles in straight sets 3-0 in Tuesday's Pink Out Night for Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Scots (10-12, 4-2) defeated the Eagles 25-13, 25-6 and 25-22 to stay near the top of the AMC standings.

Kylee Sabella led Lyon College with 18 kills, Samantha Ferguson had five kills and Paeton Tucker added four. Layla Wilson had four ace serves on the night, while Sabella had three and Erin Haigwood put two serves down. Ferguson led the Scots with two blocks for points, while Tucker and Sabella both had one. Wilson had 17 assists, Cassidy Garrett added 14 and Haigwood put up three assists in the match. Haigwood led in digs with 19, Tucker had nine and Sabella finished with six digs.

The Scots took an early 2-0 lead in the first set with kill shots from Isabella Beasley and Sabella. Sabella got another kill and Wilson served a ace. That led to another kill shot from Sabella for a 7-3 lead. Natalia Szymanska put down a kill, then a bad set and an attack error allowed the Scots to move out to a 10-4 advantage. Ferguson and Sabella responded with two kills, then Sabella added two more points for a 17-9 lead. Another Sabella kill led to a 21-11 Lyon College lead, then three straight kill shots, one by Jayden Hughes, one by Ferguson and one by Tucker, put the Scots on the verge of set point, 24-12. An attack error by Williams Baptist led to a first set win by the Scots.

Garrett started the second set for Lyon College with an ace serve and mistakes by the Eagles allowed the Scots to build a 6-0 lead. Sabella got two kills and Haigwood served an ace for an 11-4 advantage. Sabella got another kill and Wilson served up an ace to make it 13-5.  From there, the Scots outscored Williams Baptist 12-1 to win the second set. Kills from Hughes, Sabella, Berkeley Landrum and a service ace from Wilson set up Tucker for two straight kills to end it.

In the third set, Ferguson started with a kill shot, then Sabella followed with two kills and Haigwood had a service ace to make it 4-1. Beasley got a kill then Sabella served up three straight aces and a kill by Szymanska made it 11-3. Williams Baptist fought back to close the lead to 13-10, but Ferguson got a kill and Tucker served an ace. Sabella followed with a kill and Landrum added a kill shot off a set from Garrett for an 18-13 lead. Again the Eagles closed the gap, 19-17, but Tucker made a kill. Williams Baptist got close again, 20-19, but kill shots from Ferguson and Sabella, then an ace serve from Tucker opened up a two-point lead for the Scots. Sabella got a the final kill off a set from Garrett to end the match.
