MCKENZIE, TENN. - The Lyon College volleyball Scots ended a two-game Tennessee trip with a 3-0 loss against the Bethel Wildcats in McKenzie, Tennessee on Saturday afternoon.
The non-conference loss put the Scots at 9-12 overall. Lyon College battled in the first set, but fell 28-26, but the second set was as close 25-16 and a 25-20 loss in the third set ended the match.
Kaylee Sabella had 12 kills to lead the Scots,
Samantha Ferguson had eight kills and
Paeton Tucker was credited with seven. Tucker,
Natalia Szymanska and
Layla Wilson all had ace serves in the match.
Isabella Beasley had two blocks, while Szymanska and Ferguson both had one block.
Cassidy Garrett had 13 assists, Wilson had 12 and
Madeline Hopson finished with four assists.
Erin Haigwood led in digs with 14, Tucker had 10 and Sabella had eight digs for Lyon College.
Tucker got the Scots on the scoreboard in the first set with a kill, Ferguson followed with a kill, then
Jayden Hughes off a set from
Layla Wilson got a kill to make it a 6-3 Lyon College lead. Attack errors by Bethel allowed the Scots to take a 14-9 lead and two kills, one by Beasley and one by Sabella, made it 16-9. The Wildcats came back to tie the set at 21-21. A kill from Ferguson put the Scots ahead, but Bethel tied it again and took the lead on a bad set. Then the set was tied 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26 when two attack errors by the Scots ended it 28-26.
Ferguson and Sabella both had kills to start the second set for Lyon College and another kill from Sabella cut Bethel's lead to 7-4. Tucker was able to get two kills and Sabella added another, but the Wildcats continued have the advantage 14-8. Beasley got two kills in a row and Ferguson got another kill, but the Wildcats moved out toa 22-13 lead and went on to win the set by nine points.
The third set was tied five times in the early stages with a service ace by Szymanska. Then a kill by Ferguson broke a 9-9 tie. Ferguson got another kills as did Sabella and Beasley to tie the set at 12-12. Bethel tied the contest at 19-19 and allowed the Scots only one point off an attack error for the victory.
