Lyon College women's soccer battles Central Baptist College

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Lyon College women's soccer Fighting Scots lived up to the "fighting" part of their name by battling the Central Baptist Mustangs on Tuesday afternoon at Huser Field.

A fluke goal that bounced off the top crossbar and was tapped into the net with four seconds to go in the first half put the Mustangs up 1-0 and that score held up despite a rallying battle from the Scots (1-10, 0-3) in the American Midwest Conference match.

CBC's Josie Gelsthorpe was in the right spot at the right time just before the horn sounded to end the first half, but Lyon College used everyone to keep the Mustangs from scoring again in the second half with Scots goalie Rhyan Hioki finishing with seven saves. Lyon College had five shots at the goal and one on-goal by Emily Betzold.

Abby Ponder took two shots for the Scots, while Taylor Hammons and Allison Byars had one shot each. Defensively, Deaiveon Carter, Zoe Papazoglou, Hailey Williams, Kate Whitenton, Hammons, Addy Lovell, Alexis Whitley, Betzold and Byars all combined to thwart 19 shots by the Mustangs, eight of which were legitimate on-goal shots.

Subs Destine Flowers, Alice Pellham, Alli Mead, Trinity Arrambide and Ashlyn Winters were effective defenders in their time in the match.

In the first two minutes of the contest, Ponder and Lovell both had corner kicks and Byars shot on goal was just wide right. Another corner kick from Ponder resulted in a a foul. On the other end, Hioki stopped two consecutive on-goal shots by the Mustangs.

At the 34:42 mark of the first half, Ponder took  a shot on goal that hit the top cross bar and bounced back to Hammons, whose shot was just wide left.

Hioki stopped two more on-goal shots by CBC in the first eight minutes of the second half. Then Ponder got free for another shot at the 68:44 mark that was wide left for the Scots. Betzold managed to get a off a close-range shot that was saved three minutes later.

Hioki made another save near the end of the match and time ran out on the Scots and the game ended on a CBC corner kick.
