Giron, Kelley lead Scots past Hannibal-LaGrange

Giron scores 23, Kelley gets 19 in Lyon's 11th win

Jade Giron scored 23 points and Paige Kelley put in 19 points and had eight rebounds in the Scots 60-35 American Midwest Conference win over the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans at Becknell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Giron was 8-of-22 from the field and made 4-of-9 three-pointers to go with 3-of-4 free throws. Kelley made six of eight of her shots from the field, made her only three-pointer and connected on 6-of-6 free throws. Mari-Hanna Newsom added eight points, while Kristen Baham added a three-pointer and six rebounds, and Allison Byers came in off the Scots bench to score five points, while Marleigh Dodson finished with two points.
As a team Lyon was 11-of-12 from the free throw line and shot 35 percent from the field for the game. Defensive, the Scots secured their fourth spot in the NAIA defensive standings with 10 steals and as a team Lyon dished out 12 assists.
Lyon led 16-12 after the first quarter and only outscored Hannibal-LaGrange 5-2 in a slow-scoring second period. In the quarter, the Scots made 1-of-14 field goals, missed six three-pointers and hit three-of-four free throws. Baham put in a three-pointer off a Giron assists, then Giron got a three-pointer and  Baham made a steal that eventually resulted in another Giron three-pointer.
Meanwhile, the Trojans were 1-of-8 on field goals, missed one three-pointer and did not shoot a free throw. At halftime, Lyon led 21-14.
Later, the Scots picked up the pace and outscored Hannibal-LaGrange 16-11 in third period. Newsom made a three-pointer, Kelley sank two free throws, Byars put in a layup and Giron made another three-pointer for the Scots.
Kelley hit two jump shots inside the paint and made a three-pointer for Lyon to start the fourth quarter. Giron added her fourth three-pointer and followed that with a jumper for a 49-29 Scots lead midway through the period. Newsom hit a three-pointer off an assist from Giron, then followed that up with a jumper. Kelley and Giron both scored field goals in the final minute to push the Scots lead to 25 points.
Lyon improves to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the AMC. Hannibal-LaGrange drops to 2-12 and 0-4 in the league.
