Scots win big

Giron leads the way for Lyon

Jade Giron, Paige Kelley, Marleigh Dodson and Mari-Hanna Newsom all scored in double figures to lead the Lyon College Scots over the visiting Missouri Baptist University Spartans 54-27 on Thursday night in American Midwest Conference action at Becknell Gymnasium.
Giron led all scorers with 14 points and had six rebounds. Dodson had 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, Kelley scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds and Newsom scored 10 points and had three steals. Kristen Baham scored five points and hauled down five rebounds, while Paige Tate and Ashley Reichart had two points each.
Missouri Baptist was led by Tionne Taylor with seven points.  
Lyon College, with the fourth best defensive team in recent NAIA rankings, held the Spartans to a single free throw in the third period, while consistently disrupting three-point shots. Missouri Baptist was 1-of-14 from beyond the arch. The Scots had seven steals as a team and out-rebounded the Spartans 48-32.
Lyon outscored Missouri Baptist 16-10 in the first quarter After Giron scored the game's first points, Dodson, Newsom Baham and Kelley all made three-pointers. Dodson and Kelley both added baskets to lead the Scots to a six-point lead.
The Spartans cut the lead to four points, but Dodson and Kelley scored inside. Giron made a three-pointer to push the Lyon lead to 11 points, 23-12. Reichart put in a layup to keep the Scots lead at nine points, 25-16 by halftime.
Taylor made a free throw to start the third quarter for Missouri Baptist, then the Scots went on a 13-0 run to finish out the quarter up 38-17. Dodson, Newsom, Kelley and Baham all hit baskets. Giron added three points and Newsom finished out the quarter with a layup.
Giron hit two three-pointers for Lyon to boost the lead to 25 points. Later in the period, Kelley made to baskets in a row to keep the Scots advantage at 25, 48-23. Newsom made a three-pointer with 1:46 to play to give Lyon its largest lead of the game at 29 points, 54-29.
