Scots Fall Short in Rematch Against Bethel

The Lyon College volleyball team fell in four sets in the rematch against Bethel

MCKENZIE, Tenn. The Lyon College volleyball squared off against Bethel for the second time this season on Saturday. Bethel took game one of the series, 3-0, on Aug. 31 at Lyon. The Scots looked to return the favor against the Wildcats, but came up short in four sets.

The Scots fell to 9-5 following the loss and will return to action on Sept. 21 at John Brown at 7 p.m.

The Scots held a commanding 13-8 lead in the first set but a quick 3-0 run by the Wildcats trimmed the Lyon advantage to two, 13-11. Lyon responded with a run of its own as a kill by Layne Smith gave the Scots a 17-11 lead. Lyon held a commanding lead the rest of the set and took game one, 25-17.

A service error by the Scots gave the Wildcats a 13-9 lead in the second set before the Scots rallied back to pull within two late in the set at 22-20 following a kill by Samantha Ferguson and an attack error by Bethel. The Wildcats were able to hold off the Scots late in the set as Bethel took game two, 25-22.

Both sides were looking to take a one-set lead over the other in the third game as the two sides traded leads until the Scots broke a 12-12 tie. From there, the Scots took a 19-14 lead following a block by Charm Henderson and Maria Eleni Bampiri. Bethel used a run of its own, however, and knotted up the score at 22-22. The Scots took a pair of one-point leads down the stretch but Bethel wouldn't go away easily. After the Wildcats tied the score up once more at 25-25, Bethel took the final two points of the set and earned a 27-25 win in game three.

Bethel built a 16-9 lead midway through the fourth set and never looked back from there as the Wildcats won the match in four sets with a 25-20 victory in game number four.

Smith led the Scots offensively with a team-high 10 kills, while Adia Sherbeyn once again led the Scots defensively with 23 digs. Layla Wilson posted a team-high 22 assists for the Scots.
