Men’s Soccer Beats TAMUT in Last Non-Conference Game

BATESVILLE, Ark – (RV) Lyon College men's soccer team came up against Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Thursday evening with a point to prove, coming away with a 3-1 win during regular time.

The first half started with some physical play from both teams. Lyon controlled much of the play but couldn't quite capitalize on the early chances created. The Scots could have been made to rue their mistakes mind you, if not from a superb last-ditch tackle from Matias Lopez. An easy clearance from TAMUT off a Lyon corner set up the perfect counter attack. Luckily enough for the Scots, Lopez was alert to the runner and could stop the Eagles forward from a dangerous one-on-one situation.

The Scots didn't have to wait too long to take the lead, though. A freekick right on the edge of the penalty box was cut back into the path of Leo Galdino, who had his effort blocked, only to be drilled home on the volley in the back of the net by Tavaris Wellington. Four minutes later, Texarkana found themselves with a freekick of their own, right on the edge of the box. Diego Saladana hit a low driven shot, which seemed to go easily through the Scots wall and into the back of the goal.

Second half and the Scots found themselves trying to find the advantage for the second time in the game. After some chances in the first 15 minutes, Galdino found himself some space and a way to open his body up. Without thinking twice, he put some real whip on the ball and finished it beautifully in the top-right corner. Juan Araque had the assist on the goal.

Lyon forward Wellington wasn't satisfied there though. After bullying the Texarkana defense much of the game, he managed to get himself a brace in the 86th minute. A wide free kick whipped into the box from Galdino was met by a typical big leap from Paul-Florian Efang, who then put the ball on a plate for Wellington to slot home nicely. Wellington came close to collecting his hat-trick in the final moments of the game but just couldn't direct his header on target.

Wellington led the way for the Scots scoring two goals. Efang and Araque each finished the game with an assist.

The Scots now break even with a record of 4-4 for the season total so far. Texas A&M University-Texarkana now find themselves at 3-3 after the loss.

A little break from action and time to put in work on the training ground for the Lyon College men's soccer team. They will return for a big one on September 25th at 4pm, as they get ready to open up conference play with a road trip to Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, MO.
