O'FALLON, Mo. – The Lyon College baseball team split its first two games of its four-game American Midwest Conference series at Harris-Stowe on Thursday afternoon. The Hornets took game one, 13-2, but the Scots rebounded in game two and picked up a 12-1 victory in the nightcap.
The Scots moved to 16-20 overall and 11-11 in the AMC, while the Hornets now stand at 9-16 overall and 5-9 in the AMC.
Game One: HSSU 13, Lyon 2
Harris-Stowe jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first and another run in the bottom of the second before the Scots scored a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI-single by Tristan Buschow.
The Hornets tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth ahead of a sacrifice fly by Haydn Finley in the top of the fifth for the Scots.
HSSU pulled away with six more runs in the bottom of the sixth and took game one, 13-2.
Joe Weatherford led the Scots with two hits in the game.
Lex Meinderts took the loss as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while striking out four over four innings pitched.
Game Two: Lyon 12, HSSU 1
The Scots flipped the script in the nightcap and jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after scoring a run in the top of the first and five more in the top of the second.
Lyon added to its lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single each by Alan West and Finley.
The Scots put the game out of reach with four more runs in the top of the ninth. HSSU went on to score a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Scots evened up the series with an 11-run victory.
Cameron Hockle finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored, while Troy Strack, West, Finley, Weatherford and Buschow added two hits each.
Marcelo Terrazas earned a complete-game victory as he allowed just one run on three hits while striking out four over nine innings pitched.
The Scots and Hornets will conclude their series with another doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon at CarShield Field.
