HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Lyon College softball team split with Hannibal-LaGrange University on Friday. Lyon won the first game by a score of 12-4, while HLG won the second game, 8-7.
Lyon moves to 4-20 overall, 1-5 in the AMC, while Hannibal-LaGrange University is now 6-11 on the year, 2-2 in the AMC.
Game One: Lyon 12, Hannibal-LaGrange 4
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second inning. HLG's Peyton Milburn led off the bottom half of the inning with a single and would later come around to score, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Lyon, though, would answer back in the top of the fourth inning.
Kassidy Robinson hit a one-out double to left field.
Cheyenne Herrera, then, delivered a double, plating Robinson and knotting the game at one.
Hannibal-LaGrange would take the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Halley Gamewell drew a one-out walk. Then,
Madison Sansom hit an RBI double, plating Gamewell and tying the game at two.
Addison Harmon and
Celsey Wood followed with back-to-back RBI doubles, giving Lyon a 4-2 lead. Next,
Kassidy Robinson hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Wood.
Cheyenne Herrera kept the rally going as she slapped an RBI single into right field, extending Lyon's lead to four.
Faith Cornmesser, then, capped the rally off with a double to left field, scoring Herrera and giving Lyon a 7-2 advantage.
The Trojans scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Hailey Whittaker and an error by Lyon.
The Scots, though, would answer right back with a big inning.
Celsey Wood led off the top of the seventh inning with a single to left field. A hit-by-pitch of
Kassidy Robinson and sac bunt by
Cheyenne Herrera put runners on second and third. With two outs in the frame,
Jasmine Carlos delivered a 2-RBI single to left field, scoring Wood and Robinson.
Kortanie Ruhland, then, crushed an RBI double to left field, giving Lyon a 10-4 lead. A pair of walks of
Riley Shaw and
Melanie Mooney loaded the bases with two outs.
Addison Harmon hit a 2-RBI double to left field, scoring Ruhland and Shaw and extending Lyon's advantage to eight.
Olivia Floyd would shut the door on the Trojans in the seventh inning, giving Lyon a 12-4 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange University in game one of the doubleheader.
Offensively,
Celsey Wood paced the Scots as she went 3-for-4 in the contest, including a double, two runs scored, and one RBI.
Katelyn Platt threw the first four innings for the Scots, while striking out two and giving up two earned runs.
Olivia Floyd picked up the win as she threw the remaining three innings, while giving up one earned run.
Game Two: Hannibal-LaGrange 8, Lyon 7
The Scots scratched a run across in the first inning. After a lead-off walk of
Addison Harmon,
Celsey Wood ripped a double to right field.
Kassidy Robinson, then, hit a sac fly, scoring Harmon and giving Lyon a 1-0 lead.
HLG knotted the game at one on a Sydney Newell solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.
The Scots, though, would retake the lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by
Cheyenne Herrera, scoring
Celsey Wood.
The Trojans would respond right back as Sydney Miller delivered a 2-RBI double, giving HLG a 3-2 lead.
Hannibal-LaGrange University would score two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kaitlyn Griffen hit an RBI single and would come around to score on a Lyon error, extending HLG's lead to three.
The score would remain 5-2 in favor of the hosts from Missouri until the top of the sixth inning.
Addison Harmon hit a sac fly to left field, scoring
Sabrina Lowe and trimming Lyon's deficit to two.
The Trojans, though, would score three insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning, giving HLG an 8-3 lead.
Celsey Wood led off the top of the seventh inning with a double. After a flyout,
Cheyenne Herrera laced a double to center, plating Wood and trimming HLG's lead to four. With two outs in the frame,
Anna Beth Conditt hit a 2-RBI double, scoring Herrera and
Riley Shaw.
Sabrina Lowe, then, doubled to center, trimming Lyon's deficit to just one. The Scots would put runners on first and second with two outs, but were unable to get one more key hit and fell to HLG in the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 8-7.
Offensively,
Celsey Wood and
Cheyenne Herrera paced the Scots. Wood was 2-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored, while Herrera was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and one run scored.
UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots face Missouri Baptist University on Saturday in a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
