ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lyon College baseball team dropped both of its games in its series-opening doubleheader at Missouri Baptist by scores of 2-1 and 6-1 on Friday afternoon.
Missouri Baptist improved to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in the American Midwest Conference, while Lyon fell to 10-14 overall and 5-5 in the AMC.
Game One: MBU 2, Lyon 1
Game one of the series featured a pitcher's duel between Lex Meinderts from Lyon and Masen Palmier from Missouri Baptist. The Scots struck first, however, and pushed across a run in the opening frame on an RBI-double by Joe Weatherford.
From there, both pitchers kept each opposing offense off the board until the Spartans knotted the score with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Missouri Baptist came away with the win in the bottom of the seventh as Kyle O'Brien hit a walk-off single for the Spartans.
Meinderts suffered the loss as he allowed the two runs on six hits while striking out eight over 6.1 innings pitched.
Haydn Finley, Tristan Buschow and Weatherford all collected one hit each for the Scots.
Game Two: MBU 6, Lyon 1
In the nightcap, it was the Spartans who scored first with a run in the bottom half of the opening frame.
The score remained the same until Finley hit a solo home run for the Scots to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth.
The Spartans responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more run in both the sixth and seventh innings and took game two by a score of 6-1.
Marcelo Terrazas suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits while striking out five over six innings pitched. Aidan Pantoya added a scoreless inning in relief with a pair of strikeouts.
Jesse McGonigal led the Scots offensively as he finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Scots and Spartans will conclude their series with another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
