BATESVILLE, Ark. – The 14th-ranked Lyon College baseball team played in front of the home crowd at Fred Wann Field for the first time this season in a doubleheader against Champion Christian College. The Scots won the first two games of the four-game series today by scores of 3-0 and 7-1.
The Scots improved to 3-6 on the year with the two wins today.
Game One: #14 Lyon 3, CCC 0 (7 Inn.)
The Scots struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Alan West got hit before he moved into scoring position on a single by Joe Weatherford. An error by the Tigers led to the first run of the ball game before Jesse McGonigal plated Weatherford on a sacrifice fly.
Lyon added an insurance run in the bottom of the third on an RBI-double by Jordan Olivera.
The three-run cushion was more than enough for starting pitcher Lex Meinderts as he was dominant on the mound all day. Meinderts tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout as he set a new career-high with 12 strikeouts in the game.
Olivera led the Scots offensively as he finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.
Game Two: #14 Lyon 7, CCC 1 (7 Inn.)
Neither team was able to break into the scoring column in the nightcap until CCC scratched a run across in the top of the fourth inning.
The Scots responded back in a big way scoring seven-unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Tristan Buschow hit a one-out double down the left-field line before he came around to score on a CCC error. Derek Underwood followed with an infield single that plated another run before West hit a sacrifice fly to give the Scots a 3-1 lead.
Lyon added to its lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth as Chris Lara started the rally with a one-out walk. Buschow followed with a single to left before an errant throw by the Tigers allowed two runs to score. A wild pitch plated the third run in the inning. Troy Strack followed with a walk before West belted an RBI-double down the right-field line and gave the Scots a 7-1 lead.
West took care of the rest on the mound as he shut down the Tigers in order in the top of the seventh and earned the complete-game victory. West allowed the lone run on three hits while striking out a career-high 11 over seven innings pitched.
Buschow finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored in the nightcap.
