Scots Absorb Loss to No. 5 MBU

Lyon Volleyball Returns to Action Tomorrow for Pair of Matches

ST. LOUIS, Mo.  The Lyon College volleyball team squared off against the NAIA's fifth-ranked team tonight. The Scots tested Missouri Baptist University, but the fifth-ranked Spartans had the answers to defeat the visitors from Batesville in straight sets.  

Lyon moves to 7-10 on the year and 2-3 in American Midwest Conference action, while No. 5 Missouri Baptist University improves to 16-2 and a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play.    

GAME FLOW
After dropping the first set, 25-14, the Scots regained their composure and tied the second set at 18 apiece following one of Maggee Hobson's 14 kills in the contest. The Scots would tie the score one more time in later in the frame, but the Spartans outscored the visitors 6-2 over the final eight rallies to win the second set, 25-21.

In the third stanza, Lyon jetted out to an early 3-1 advantage after one of Layne Smith's 10 kills tonight. Both sides took small leads throughout the middle stages of the third frame until the Scots knotted up the score at 20 apiece on a block by Maria Eleni Bampiri and Courtney Erby. The hosts would quickly take a three-point lead at 24-21. However, Lyon continued to fight back as another Layne Smith kill, assisted by Kendra Davidson, brought the Scots within one point at 24-23. The fifth-ranked Spartans, though, won the next point to win the set and seal the victory.

KEY STATISTICS
- Kendra Davidson tallied a team-high 15 assists in the contest.    
- Maggee Hobson recorded a match-high 14 kills and team-leading .278 hitting percentage.        
- Layne Smith notched 10 kills and accounted for both of Lyon's aces in the match.       
- MBU bested Lyon in aces, 11-2.  

WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots will play two pivotal matches tomorrow with American Midwest Conference tournament seeding implications on the line. Lyon will battle University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Harris-Stowe State University at 1:30 p.m.
