Scots Drop Conference Doubleheader to WBU

Lyon College Softball falls to Williams Baptist University, 6-3 and 7-1

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College softball team fell to Williams Baptist University, 6-3 and 7-1, in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

Lyon moves to 3-14 overall, 0-2 in the AMC, while Williams Baptist University improves to 10-8 on the year, 2-0 in the AMC.

Game One: Williams Baptist 6, Lyon 3
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. After a one-out single by Jasmine Carlos and walk of Halley Gamewell, Kassidy Robinson laid down an excellent bunt that was thrown away down the right field line, scoring Carlos and giving Lyon a 1-0 lead. Robinson, then, stole second as Gamewell was caught in a rundown between third and home. Gamewell, though, used her speed to beat the throw at the plate, doubling Lyon's advantage. Riley Shaw followed suit and executed a perfect squeeze, scoring Robinson and giving the Scots a 3-0 lead after five innings of play.

The Lady Eagles, though, would answer right back with a big inning as Alyssa Cordell hit a solo home run with one out in the frame. Macy Carter, then, delivered a 2-out single, plating one and cutting Lyon's lead to just one. A Chasity Gandy 2-RBI single gave WBU a 4-3 lead as the Scots came to bat in the bottom of the inning.

Cheyene Herrera drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but the Scots were unable to get anything else going in the frame.

WBU got a couple insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning on a 2-run home run by Kennedy Johnson.

Halley Gamewell led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single. The Scot, though, were unable to bring the tying run up to the plate and fell to Williams Baptist University by a score of 6-3.

Lyon was led in the circle by Katelyn Platt. Platt pitched 5 1/3 innings, while striking out three and holding WBU to two runs.

Game Two: Williams Baptist 7, Lyon 1
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning. Megan Weis slapped a 2-out RBI triple down the left field line, giving WBU a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles would score four runs in the top of the fifth inning, extending WBU's lead to five.

An RBI double by Kadra Cole and a wild pitch in the top of the seventh plated two more WBU runners, giving the Lady Eagles a 7-0 lead.

The Scots scratched a run across in the bottom of the seventh as Riley Shaw led off the frame with a triple. Jasmine Carlos, then, hit an RBI single up the middle. Lyon was unable to get anything else going and fell to the Lady Eagles by a score of 7-1 on Tuesday.

Offensively, Riley Shaw paced the Scots as she had a pair of hits, including a triple in the contest.
