ALEXANDRIA, La. – With the score tied at 57-57,
Jade Giron found
Katie Turner, who made a layup with two seconds remaining and finished off the three-point play with a free throw as the No. 2-seed Lyon College women's basketball team defeated No. 1-seed Lindsey Wilson, 60-57, in the championship game of the Alexandria Bracket B Opening Round pod on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Scots improved to 15-1 on the season and advanced to the Round of 16 of the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship, which will begin on Mar. 18 in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Scots erased a 30-24 halftime deficit and rallied back to take a 39-38 lead over the Blue Raiders with 2:27 left to go in the third quarter on a bucket by
Paige Kelley. After the two teams went on to exchange leads, the Scots found themselves ahead, 43-41, at the end of the third quarter on a pair of free throws by Giron.
The Scots extended their lead to as many as six in the fourth quarter before LWC roared back to knot the score at 57-57 on a three-pointer by Sydnie Hall with 29 seconds left. Lyon College head women's basketball coach
Tracy Stewart-Lange called a timeout and drew up the final play for the Scots as Giron found Turner near the basket for what turned out to be the game-winning shot.
Giron (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Kelley (19 points, 11 rebounds) both finished with a double-double, while Turner added 11 points.
