NEW ORLEANS, La. – The 14th-ranked Lyon College baseball team came up short in the final two games of its series at Loyola New Orleans by scores of 2-0 and 7-6.
The Scots fell to 5-9 overall, while Loyola New Orleans improved to 13-8.
Game One: Loyola New Orleans 2, #14 Lyon 0
The Scots received another strong pitching performance by Lex Meinderts as he allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five but a pair of runs in the bottom of the third by the Wolf Pack proved to be the difference in the game.
Joe Weatherford and Alec White collected one hit each for the Scots.
Game Two: Loyola New Orleans 7, #14 Lyon 6
Loyola New Orleans took an early 3-0 lead over Lyon in the series finale after the Wolf Pack scored two runs in the bottom of the second and added another run in the bottom of the third.
The Scots pulled back within one with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth as White doubled to left-center field before Evan Hylek got hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. After a sacrifice bunt by Tristan Buschow moved the pair up to second and third, Jake Michener plated both runners with a two-run single.
The Wolf Pack responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and another run in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead over the Scots.
Lyon put up a crooked number in the top of the seventh as Michener reached on an error before he came around to score on a single by Alan West. The Scots loaded the bases as Haydn Finley drew a walk and Weatherford got hit by a pitch. Lyon then plated a run on a groundout before Hakeem Yatim drove in another run with an RBI-single to right.
Down two runs headed into the top of the ninth, West began the frame with a double down the right-field line. Finley got hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to put two runners on for the Scots but they were only able to push one run across in the frame.
Marcelo Terrazas suffered the loss as he allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out three over four innings pitched. Ethan Denney and Aidan Pantoya both tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
West led the Scots offensively as he finished 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Scots will return home and open up American Midwest Conference play next weekend against Columbia College. The Scots and Cougars will open up their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. Lyon will hold a ceremony for the new lights at Fred Wann Field between games during Saturday's doubleheader.
