BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College baseball team earned a split in its first two games of its series against (RV) Columbia College on Saturday evening. The Scots dropped game one, 6-0, but earned a 12-4 victory during the nightcap, which was the first night game in program history at Fred Wann Field.
The Scots moved to 6-10 overall and 1-1 in the American Midwest Conference, while CC now stands at 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the AMC.
Game One: (RV) Columbia 6, Lyon 0
After scoring a run each in both the third and fourth innings, Columbia added four runs in the top of the sixth as the Cougars took game one, 6-0.
Tristan Buschow collected the lone hit of the game for the Scots.
Lex Meinderts pitched well, but suffered the loss as he allowed six runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Aidan Pantoya and Thomas Fletcher both tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Scots.
Game Two: Lyon 12, (RV) Columbia 4
Prior to game two, Lyon College held a ceremony for the new lights at Fred Wann Field. Fred Wann, who is a former baseball coach and a Hall of Fame member was the one who turned the lights on for the first time during the ceremony.
Columbia pushed an early run across in the top of the first, but the Scots responded with nine-unanswered runs over the second through sixth innings and took a 9-1 lead over the Cougars.
CC added two more runs in the top of the seventh, but the Scots responded with another run in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI-single by Buschow.
The Cougars scored once more in the top of the eighth, but once again, the Scots had an answer in the bottom half of the inning. Alan West and Joe Weatherford both walked ahead before Jordan Olivera roped an RBI-double down the left-field line. A wild pitch plated Weatherford later in the inning as the Scots evened the series with a 12-4 win in game two.
Olivera had a big game offensively as he finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Alec White, Troy Strack and Weatherford added two hits each.
Marcelo Terrazas picked up the win as he allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out nine over six innings of work. Fletcher and Nash Winters both tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
The Scots and Cougars will wrap up their series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon at Fred Wann Field.
