TEXARKANA, Texas – The (RV) Lyon College softball team defeated Texas A&M-Texarkana, 5-4, and Xavier University of Louisiana, 9-6 in the opening day of the Texarkana Tournament.
(RV) Lyon moves to 2-0 on the season. Xavier University of Louisiana goes to 1-1, while Texas A&M-Texarkana drops to 0-2.
Game One: (RV) Lyon 5, Texas A&M-Texarkana 4 (8 Inn.)
The Eagles scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Scots, though, answered back in the top of the fourth.
Kassidy Robinson opened the frame with a single to center.
Faith Cornmesser, then, followed with a single of her own to put runners on the corner with no outs. After a pair of outs and a stolen base by Cornmesser,
Jasmine Carlos delivered a 2-out 2-RBI single to right field, knotting the game at two.
Texas A&M–Texarkana would score a run in the bottom half of the inning as Katelyn Hammer hit an RBI triple to right field, scoring Cassidy Lee and giving the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.
Kortanie Ruhland drew a walk to lead off the top of the fifth inning. A sac bunt by
Melanie Mooney moved Ruhland into scoring position. After Harmon reached on an error and
Kassidy Robinson reached on a walk,
Faith Cornmesser stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. Cornmesser, then, slapped an RBI single to right, tying the game at three.
The Eagles, though, would score a run in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single by Jade Martin, giving Texas A&M–Texarkana a 4-3 lead after five innings of play.
In the top of the seventh inning, a pair of singles by
Kortanie Ruhland and
Addison Harmon put runners on the corner with one out for the Scots.
Kassidy Robinson, then, delivered an RBI groundout, scoring Ruhland and knotting the game at four.
Texas A&M–Texarkana loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but
Katelyn Platt was up to the challenge and induced a groundout to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning,
Cheyenne Herrera slapped an RBI single into right field, giving Lyon their first lead of the game.
Katelyn Platt would secure the win for the Scots as she got Texas A&M-Texarkana's Erika Richardson to fly out to center to end the game.
Offensively, Lyon was led by a pair of Scots.
Faith Cornmesser was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Jasmine Carlos tallied two RBI's in the contest. Lyon was led in the circle by
McKenzie Campbell and
Katelyn Platt. Campbell threw six and 2/3 innings, striking out two in her Lyon debut.
Katelyn Platt came in in relief and threw an inning and 1/3, while picking up the win.
Game Two: (RV) Lyon 9, Xavier University of Louisiana 6
The Gold Nuggets took a four-run lead into the fourth inning. The Scots, however, scored nine runs over the next three innings to take a 9-6 lead to secure their second win in as many games.
Lyon was led offensively by
Cheyenne Herrera and
Addison Harmon. Herrera went 3-for-4 in the contest with three runs scored and one RBI, while Harmon went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and drew a pair of walks.
Olivia Floyd came on in relief to earn her first collegiate victory in the circle, while
Katelyn Platt collected the save.

Lyon continues play in the Texarkana Tournament tomorrow as the Scots face Xavier University of Louisiana at 10:00 a.m. and Texas A&M - Texarkana at 3:00 p.m.
