BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College volleyball team was terrific in their home opener tonight. The Scots started the evening with a four-set victory over Freed-Hardeman University before besting Philander Smith College in the nightcap.
With the two key victories, Lyon improves to 3-2 on the season. FHU falls to 10-4, while PSC goes to 2-3.
GAME FLOW
Freed-Hardeman University
The first set was a back-and-forth affair with both teams exchanging leads. With the score tied at 24 apiece late in the first stanza, the Scots converted on the next two points to take the first set, 26-24.
The second set started similar to the first set as the score was tied 14-14 in the middle of the second frame. The Scots rallied to win the next five points to take a 19-14 advantage. The Lady Lions cut Lyon's lead to two, but the hosts were too strong as a
Layne Smith kill gave the Scots a second-set victory, 25-22.
After Freed-Hardeman University took the third frame, the Scots jumped out to an early 9-6 lead in the fourth stanza. The Lady Lions would tie the set one time, but that would be as close as the visitors from Tennessee would get as the Scots closed out the match with a 25-17 fourth-set victory.
Philander Smith College
Maggee Hobson's four consecutive service aces in the early stages of the first set gave the Scots an 8-6 lead over the Lady Panthers. PSC fought back and tied the score at 15 apiece. However, the hosts found their stride as they finished the set on a 10-4 run to take the first stanza, 25-19.
The second frame was similar to the first as the score was once again tied, 15-15. PSC won the next point, but the Scots took back the lead by winning the next three rallies. The Panthers tried to take the lead back, but Lyon was too efficient as the Scots won the second set, 25-22.
The Lady Panthers would not go down without a fight as they won a close third set, 28-26. However, the Scots continued to use their size and athleticism at the net to overwhelm PSC throughout the fourth stanza. The Scots clinched the victory on a block by
Madison James and
Kendra Davidson.
