BATESVILLE, Ark. – The 14th-ranked Lyon College baseball team opened up its season by facing some of the best teams in the NAIA at the "Cajun Collision." The Scots came up short in each of their four games. Lyon fell to No. 6 LSU-Shreveport, 4-0, and No. 2 University of Science and Arts, 14-1, on Sunday and No. 10 Central Methodist, 4-0, and Benedictine College, 9-5, on Monday.
Game One: #6 LSUS 4, #14 Lyon 0 (7 Inn.)
LSU-Shreveport put across three runs between the first two innings and added another run in the fifth to earn a 4-0 win over the Scots in the opening game of the "Cajun Collision."
Joe Weatherford led the Scots offensively as he went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Lex Meinderts suffered the loss as he allowed three runs on two hits while striking out three over two innings pitched.
Nash Winters threw two scoreless innings of relief, while Aidan Pantoya also tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Game Two: #2 USAO 14, #14 Lyon 1 (7 Inn.)
The University of Science and Arts scored 14 runs between the third and seventh innings before the Scots put a run across in the bottom half of the seventh. Dustin Caplett led off the inning with a walk and moved into scoring position after Cameron Gordon got hit by a pitch. After a walk by Jayden Cull loaded the bases, Joey Smith drew a walk and plated the lone run of the game for the Scots.
Alan West finished 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Scots offensively.
West suffered the loss on the mound as he allowed six runs on four hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched.
Game Three: #10 CMU 4, #14 Lyon 0 (7 Inn.)
The Scots and Eagles remained scoreless through four innings until CMU scratched a run across in the top of the fifth and added three more runs in the sixth.
West and Weatherford collected the lone hits in the game for the Scots.
Marcelo Terrazas pitched well but suffered the loss as he allowed four runs (one earned) on sixth hits while striking out eight over six innings pitched. Calvin Hedgepeth threw a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh.
Game Four: Benedictine College 9, #14 Lyon 5 (7 Inn.)
The Scots broke the scoring column first in the top of the third as Logan Doody started the inning with a bunt single. Jake Michener and West both got hit by a pitch to load the bases for Alec White who delivered an RBI-single. Later in the inning, Troy Strack belted a double to right-center field to plate two runs and gave Lyon a 3-0 lead.
Benedictine responded with six unanswered runs over the next three innings before the Scots cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Chris Lara led off the inning with a single before Jesse McGonigal got hit by a pitch to put two runners on for the Scots. Later in the inning, Michener delivered a two-run single to center to pull the Scot within one, 6-5.
BC added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth before they closed the game out in the top of the seventh.
Michener and Stack both collected two hits each and drove in two runs.
Meinderts suffered the loss as he allowed three unearned runs in relief.
The Scots will return back to Batesville and host Clarke University this weekend for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The series will open up on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
